Dunvant had to fight hard for the full 80 minutes against a strong Maesteg Quins team but emerged 23-19 winners.

Scores:
Dunvant: 23

Tries: 11 Adam Williams-Parry, 10 Aled Lewis
Conversions: 11 Adam Williams-Parry (2)
Penalties: 11 Adam Williams-Parry (3)
Maesteg Quins: 19
Try: 9 Lee Ronan, Conversion: 10 Gareth Lewis, Penalties: 10 Gareth Lewis (4)
Half-Time: Dunvant 17 Maesteg Quins 16

When these teams met last October the game was dominated by a high penalty count Dunvant scored the only try but were outscored on penalty kicks to lose by 4 points. Today was de ja vous but this time with Dunvant winning by 4 points in another game of numerous penalties but two tries apiece as well. Dunvant put out a strong team giving hope to supporters of another big victory when we beat Quins 32-0 on their last visit to Broadacre stopping their 10 game unbeaten run.
Quins turned up with not only a big pack but even the backs were pretty chunky, their bill for Shredded Wheat must be colossal. In spite of the sunshine this was a bitterly cold and windy day, with Quins kicking off towards the St Hilary’s end supported by the wind. Within 4 minutes Quins had a penalty in our 22 which outside half Gareth Lewis kicked for a 0-3 lead. Three minutes later when a Dunvant attack broke down with advantage being played, they were brought back for a penalty just outside the 22 which left wing Adam Williams-parry kicked to level the scores at 3-3. Quins were attacking hard, getting the better of the scrums and the backs frequently showing some pacey runs only to be stopped by Dunvant defence. On 20 minutes Quins were awarded a penalty two metres inside their own half which Lewis opted to kick and supported by the wind the kick from 52 metres sailed over and probably had another 10 metres to spare for 3-6. Then Dunvant got lucky, but you make your own luck and a clearance kick by Quins was charged down for inside centre Mitchell Ford to run under the posts, converted by Adam to put Dunvant back in the lead at 10-6. On 25 minutes, Quins had another penalty on our 22 and some quick thinking with a quick tap penalty saw scrum half Lee Ronan scamper through he defence for a swan dive between the posts, Lewis converting for 10-13. On the half hour, Dunvant were pinged for offside some 30 metres out but in front of goal and Lewis extended Quins lead to 10-16. Then shortly before half time with Quins attacking again near our 22, Dunvant outside half Aled Lewis intercepted a pass and ran the length of the pitch with Quins in hot pursuit just failing to catch him as he ran under the posts, Adam converting to put Dunvant back in the lead at 17-16 which remained the half time score.
Given the cold conditions, both sides returned to the dressing rooms for the interval, only the referee braving the cold outside. Dunvant came out after 5 but Quins remained inside for quite a lengthy delay to the restart, they must have been stoking up on their shredded wheat for the second half.
Dunvant restarted the second half on 45 minutes Adam extended the lead to 20-16 with a kick from about 27 metres. On 48 minutes, Dunvant were penalised for a high tackle on our 10 metre line which Lewis kicked to touch. From the lineout Quins tried to maul over but Dunvant were able to turn over possession and clear their lines. Quins got another penalty about 6 minutes later just inside the 22 which Lewis kicked to narrow the lead to 20-19.
However, with Dunvant attacking again, Adam kicked a penalty from out wide to take the score to 23-19, shortly before he was named as the Dunvant Rugby Club Singers Man of the Match. There was still 5 minutes left to play and Quins were making some strong runs but Dunvant defence held out. Quins nearly had the final say with a run down the right hand touchline to go over but the try was not given for a foot in touch. The referee called time and Dunvant were relieved to have secured the victory in such a hard fought contest.
Elsewhere, on a sad note, Skewen’s game against Cwmllynfell was called off as Cwm’s Hon. Sec Eirion Richards had passed away that morning. Our condolences go to all at Cwmllynfell RFC and of course to Eirion’s family.
Next up for Dunvant is a trip to Mumbles who are not getting the results they deserve losing several high scoring games by fine margins. In spite of only two victories this season, both home wins, they will definitely be wanting to put one on Dunvant so make sure you come to Underhill Park next weekend before France play Wales at 5.00 p.m
