With thanks to Dunvant Fixture Secretary, Gerald Roberts, for providing this report:
As the saying goes,’ there is more than one way to skin a cat’. Well, Dunvant have shown in their last two games they are well aware of this. Last week, on a perfect pitch in good conditions, they displayed a brand of rugby that was barbarian like which had it’s supporters purring with pleasure, whilst this week, after heavy rain you had pitch conditions more akin to an ice rink and it was against a very good Felinfoel side determined to mark the death of their long serving Team Manager with a win, so that for Dunvant to win would require a huge effort. It was evident from early on that both sides were going to give everything to be the victors.
Dunvant played with the wind and we were treated to some prodigious out of hand kicking by both Aled Lewis (10) and Adam Williams-Parry (15) that kept Felinfoel pinned in their twenty two for most of the half. However, despite this territorial advantage, Dunvant had to rely on two Aled Lewis penalty goals to lead at half time.
It was obvious that with Felinfoel’s excellent set piece and now with the wind in their favour, that Dunvant required a herculean effort to stay in the game. As expected, Felinfoel threw everything at Dunvant and now it was time to show some resilience to combat them, with flankers Rhys Tucker and skipper for the day Lewis Buckley leading the way, whilst scrum half Sam Gallagher must have covered every blade of grass in a superb team defensive display. Gradually, the Dunvant pack started winning some decent ball and with Aled and Adam pulling the strings Tom Davies almost scored and a spell of intense pressure led to two unsuccessful penalty attempts. Then, a piece of magic from Adam Williams-Parry led to the decisive score. Re-gathering his own high kick Adam showed blistering acceleration before linking up with both centres who released wing Tom Davies whose final pass put debutant centre Scott Watkins over for a magnificent try which Aled Lewis improved with a superb conversion.
It was a score that deserved to win any game and taking into account the conditions, the handling was exceptional. Full credit to Felinfoel who managed with the last play of the game to score which left them with a fully deserved bonus point. Finally, I must congratulate Dunvant’s No.8 Mark Loughlin on a remarkable |Man of the Match performance, whether picking up ball at a retreating scrum or just making the hard yards, he gave an awesome display. The Dunvant team were deserved winners over a very good and committed Felinfoel team and if promotion is achieved this game may well have been our finest win.
