DUNVANT PROMOTED WITH TRY BONUS POINT WIN AT PONTARDDULAIS (Apr 7th)
Dunvant fought back form a 13-5 half time deficit with two quick tries after the break and then capitalised with a try bonus point 18-30 win.
Would Dunvant slip up against bottom placed Bont or would the second half give them the win needed for promotion?
Almost immediately from Dunvant’s restart, a superb break by Jaen Botes cleared three defenders, and when he went to ground the ball was rucked out, passed to outside centre Sam Crowley who ran over in the right hand corner. Adam Williams was unable to convert but Dunvant had narrowed the score to 13-10. Our next score came on 46 minutes, when from a penalty kick to touch for a lineout near the 22, Jaen Botes secured the ball, and replacement flanker Rhys Tucker, on for Oscar Savage, ran in under the posts, Adam Williams converted, and Dunvant led for the first time in the match 13-17. On 54 minutes, Dunvant were awarded a penalty our 22, which failed to find touch but took us into Bont’s 22 in the strong wind, Bont infringed and Adam Williams had an easy penalty in front of goal for 13-20. Bont however were not giving up and having got down near our right hand corner worked the ball right across the pitch to run over and score in the left hand corner, unable to convert, but the scores were back in touch at 18-20. Just on the hour, Dunvant had a penalty kick 25 metres out but the strong wind veered it wide of the left hand post. Almost immediately a further penalty on the 10 metre line was awarded and this time Adam Williams stroked it over for 18-23. Bont continued to attack, choosing to kick penalties to touch for lineouts but Dunvant’s defence held firm on several occasions. The final score of the game came from Dunvant’s winger Joe Carney Withers who made a darting run down the right hand flank to run nearer the posts, Adam Williams converted for 18-30, a try bonus point and a magnificent away victory, so rare this season, which guarantees Dunvant’s return to Division 2 West.
On behalf of Dunvant’s Management Committee, I offer wholesome congratulations to our 1st team Squad, the Coaches, Physios and all the backroom staff who have contributed to such a successful season. Thank you one and all. Next weekend we host Tenby United at Broadacre, coached by former Dunvant favourite Fijiian Emori Katalou, in our last game of the season. Come on down to show your appreciation to our winning squad, and don’t forget to put your ”Supporter’s Player of the Year” voting form in the box behind the bar.
