Games between Skewen and Dunvant are always close encounters and today was no different, but once again as so often this season our boys did not get the rub of the green, even though they played their hearts out.
The first score went to Dunvant after 5 minutes with a penalty for Dunvant for some Skewen chopsing saw Adam Williams-Parry, today playing as left wing kick a penalty goal from just outside the 22 for 0-3. Skewen mounted a return attack down the right wing, kicked a penalty to touch for a lineout but were then penalised allowing Dunvant to clear their lines. A charge down the left wing looked as if Skewen may score but the ball was knocked on and Dunvant again were able to clear from the scrum. Finally on 12 minutes Skewen pressure won through for lock forward Reece Jenkins to score, outside half Anthony Buselli converting for Skewen to lead 7-3. The game was finely balanced with both sides having a go but on 20 minutes disaster for Dunvant when scrum half Gareth Davies was red carded “for Stamping/Trampling on an Opponent”, a decision which cost Dunvant dearly for the rest of the game. From the resultant penalty near the 10 metre line , kicked to touch for a lineout Skewen scored again, believed to be lock forward James Price, converted by Buselli for 14-3. On the half hour a terrific cross field kick from Dunvant outside half Aled Lewis was caught right across the pitch by wing Mark Robbins for 14-8 with Adam Wiiliams-Parry missing the conversion. The final score of the first half saw a penalty kicked by Williams-Parry to narrow the score to 14-11 and set it up nicely for the second half.
As the game restarted, obviously with a man short, Dunvant had chances to take the lead. Firstly Williams-Parry on 43 minutes was just short with a penalty kick just inside the 10 metre line, then with the kicking duties handed to Aled Lewis on 48 minutes a penalty kick from 30 metres in front of the posts was just wide.. Dunvant were exerting great periods of pressure on Skewen’s try line but just could not get the break through their efforts deserved, and eventuaaly a penalty allowed Skewen to clear their lines. We then had a lengthy delay for an injury to a Skewen player and just after another long delay for an injury to Dunvant lock forward Tom Falvey who had dislocated his knee. Fortunately the medics got it back in and Tom was stretchered off to a big round of applause from both sides. We wish Tom a speedy recovery. On 70 minutes Skewen made their first real foray of the second half into Dunvant territory, set up a driving maul which went some distance towards the try line, Dunvant were penalised for collapsing and Buselli gratefully extended Skewen’s lead to 17-11 with an easy kick at goal. Two minutes later a great kick and chase down the left wing saw Skewen scoring again with scrum half James Ball crossing the line, converted by Buselli for 24-11. They almost scored again but magnificent defending saw Skewen penalised and Dunvant clear their lines. Then with the final whistle looming, Skewen had a 5 metre scrum in front of the posts but knocked on, then the same thing again, and finally Dunvant conceded a scrum . Great defending saw Adam Williams-Parry get the ball and escape to look as if he was away clear to score but was brought back. Not quite sure what happened there as it seemed it was either potentially a score for Adam or a penalty try for Skewen. The final whistle went for Skewen having secured the win against a gutsy, plucky, Dunvant team who once again gave their all for the whole 80 minutes and perhaps could have won with a full complement for the whole game.
The boys now have a much deserved break before a really tough January with Tata away, Pontypool home. Bedlinog away and then the long trip to North wales for the cup game against RGC 1404.
Merry Xmas & Happy New Year boys, your Club is proud of you.
