Felinfoel informed us last Thursday that due to a stag weekend they were a couple of props short for the bench so passive scrums would be the order of the day. However Dunvant could use a full squad of 20 with Foel limited to the bare 15 players for the full 80 minutes. Other than that they fielded their first choice 15 and boy were they big, like giants against our small squad, it must be the Felinfoel Brewery Double Dragon Ale, tell Paul to get some in at Broadacre.
The game started with Foel playing down the slope with a supporting breeze and Dunvant playing uphill facing into a bright sun. We were pretty well pinned in our half but the first scoring opportunity came for Dunvant on 15 minutes with a penalty goal attempt by wing Sam Evans. The kick looked good until it veered wide in the wind just wide of the posts. On 28 minutes a terrific break by inside centre Danny Davies which resulted in Sam Evans scoring but missing his conversion so 0-5 to Dunvant. Frequent attacks from Foel kept Dunvant defence busy throughout the first half but it remained 0-5 to Dunvant at half time.
Dunvant restarted the 2nd half , but Foel are well used to playing up the hill and were again getting the better of possession. The next score went to Foal on the hour mark with a try and conversion to put them 7-0 in the lead. From the restart Dunvant were awarded a penalty on the 22 but Sam Evans kick hit the post and bounced off. However six minutes later a similar penalty for Sam saw him put Dunvant in the lead 7-8. Dunvant were pressing hard and prop Sam martin looked to have scored on the left hand corner but the try was disallowed for a double movement. By this time we were getting some lengthy stoppages as Foel players were going down needing treatment so a lot of added time was needed. On the stroke of normal time Foel scored their second try, again converted to lead 14-8. Fair play to Dunvant, they continued battling and in the 3rd minute of added time flanker Adam Gregory broke clear to score, converted by Sam Evans for what became the final score Felinfoel 14 Dunvant 15.
Well done boys. We now await the 2nd round draw and the game will be played on Saturday 28th October.
