MALTON AND NORTON 40 DURHAM CITY 24
Out-gunned in the set-scrums throughout and trailing 10 – 26 two minutes into the second half, City clawed their way back into an exciting first meeting with newly-promoted Yorkshire side Malton and Norton in the North 1 East League to reduce the defici
A try by Malton’s livewire winger Josh Saunders after 12 minutes who intercepted and raced 50 metres down the touchline opened their account, but City responded with a penalty by scrum-half Paul Armstrong and controversial try by winger Chris Metcalfe who squeezed in at the corner after stand-off Adam Morton and Armstrong had combined to send him on his way. Armstong converted and City led 10 – 5 after 19 minutes.
But Saunders was at it again with a repeat of his opening try 5 minutes before the interval, centre Teei Piawi converting to recover the lead, and when City conceded a penalty try at a 5 metre scrum after huge Malton pressure and Piawi converted to take the half-time score to
19 - 10, things looked ominous for the visitors.
But then the fightback began. Good work by winger Richard Ellis and lock Peter Dent and a big forward drive to the home line ended with Armstrong nipping over for their second try from the ruck and converting after 37 minutes. Centre Will Kirtley then crossed only to be brought back for a forward pass, again they went over in the corner only to be awarded a penalty 5 metres out as the referee ignored advantage to City and then several catch and driven lineouts were held up over the Malton line. Finally however, they got their reward when Armstrong dive over for his second try from a 5 metre scrum and again converted to put City right back in it at 24 – 26 with 20 minutes left.
But the home forward pressure was telling and over-anxiety in the City ranks didn’t help their cause as they tried to force the issue running from deep, kicking out of defence into areas that allowed Malton to counter-attack. Finally the bubble burst in the last few minutes, home stand-off Tom Newitt and Piawi adding Malton’s final tries which Piawi converted to give his side a deserved win.
