Programme Notes v Middlesbrough

21 April 2012 Here we are then – end of another North 1 East League season and it’s all over bar the shouting! Billingham up, Percy Park in a play-off, Team Northumbria and Gateshead down and an anxious day for the two Halifax sides Old Brods and Old Crossleyans, one of which will surely join them, although there’s a remote chance it could be Morpeth.

No such worries for today’s visitors to Hollow Drift! Middlesbrough, to whom as ever we extend a very warm welcome, have looked likely promotion candidates all season until a late Percy Park surge scuppered their chances and will finish third or just below, dependent on today’s results.
As for City, 2 league points from the last 6 games as the injury-list has mounted and mounted throughout the season is worrying, but not the end of the world with league safety gained before that run started. Thank goodness though it didn’t start earlier and a good finish today would do everyone a power of good!
Elsewhere in the Club last week, the Thirds had a good 41 – 20 win over Darlington, the U.18s lost 19 – 50 to Consett, the 15s toured Yorkshire losing both games, the 14s won the Plate at the Alnwick 7s and both U.13s squads won at Middlesbrough. At Mini level, 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s all won at Guisborough. I should at this point also congratulate the various age-levels who have been successful in County Cup competitions this year. Unfortunately, I don’t have the details to hand, but can confirm the success of the U.15s in their final against “unbeaten” Mowden Park.
Tomorrow and next week it’s all go at Hollow Drift! We start in the morning with Finals of the U.18s County Cup and Plate – the Plate first (Darlington v Billingham KO.11.00 am) followed by the Cup (Mowden Park v Westoe KO. 2.00 pm). Then on Wednesday night, we host the County Junior Cup Final (Bishop Auckland v Winlaton Vulcans KO. tbc) followed on Saturday by the County Second Teams Final (Blaydon v Mowden Park KO. 3.00pm) – and to finish off, on the Sunday of course, it’s the Guinness Book of Records attempt for the most number of players taking part in a match, for which hopefully there’ll be a big turnout and a substantial sum raised for the Kev Showler Fund and Help the Heroes.
Meanwhile, as far as City sides are concerned tomorrow, the U.14s (H), 16s and 18s (A) play Acklam and the U.13s play Darlington in their County Cup Final at Stockton – and the best of luck to them! The 12s are on tour in Yorkshire, 10s away to Bishop Auckland , 9s and 7s at Alnwick Festival and 8s away to Billingham ---------phew!!
Oh! Silly me - I nearly forgot! The following weekend (Saturday 5th/ Sunday 6th May), it’s Town and Gown Sevens time again! Will this season ever end??
Right, that’s it – Let’s hope we have a good match, but whatever enjoy the day!
