Beeston's report on the match...
Sunday saw Durham arrived at 11.00 for a 2.00pm start as their Men’s team were playing at local rivals Belper, so they had plenty of time to get the journey down the M1 out of their system. Beeston knew that the Durham side, full of England U21 internationals had the potential to cause problems. Durham came out of the blocks fast and hard.
Durham have a habit of scoring from penalty corners and the Bees conceded the first after 3 minutes. Dawkins however was not going to let Durham’s Boddy continue her run of form and pulled off a remarkable double save, one that keepers from higher divisions would be proud of. After 12 minutes Dawkins was called into action again to deny the Durham short corner team with a save and clearance.
Beeston had their chances at the other end on the break with Tebbs in the Durham goal making a great save from a Wraith shot. Dawkins continued to marshal her defence and lead by example deny the Durham attack. A period of Beeston dominance saw Durham’s Hawkins yellow carded and Beeston awarded a short corner. The initial corner was well saved as Durham’s defence held strong, but the award of a second short corner saw Kim Leiper get on the score sheet with a well worked deflection.
Half time saw the match evenly poised with Durham playing very high and sending long balls out of defence. The Beeston back four again cut out a lot by stepping up as Coach Taylor had demanded pre match. This was always going to be a close game and a period of Durham pressure resulted in Durham equalising through Seaborn on 47 minutes and taking the lead when Lane capitalised on a Beeston error that opened the defence up.
Beeston were not going down without a fight and the last ten minutes saw some composed defending and aggressive attacking with Hunter causing problems for the Durham defence. It was at this time that the game became disjointed with frustrations running high with players, both sets of spectators and the benches puzzled by some of the umpiring decisions. Beeston surged forward through Hunter and were duly awarded another penalty corner. This year the conversion rate from corners has dramatically increased and Hunter made sure deflecting in the equaliser with a minute left to play.
Beeston deserved their point for a solid fight back; Durham will be disappointed not to have got more from the game. If the Ladies had been offered 4 points out of six at the beginning of the weekend, with two of their hardest games back to back, it would have been taken.
