Durham University vs Sheffield University

Durham University played Sheffield University, coming away with a 25-0 victory.

Durham University Men’s Lacrosse team went into their third match of the season with two solid victories under their belt and this match was no different. Playing the less experienced Sheffield University side, who deserve credit for their perseverance during the match, the Palatinates were able to set the terms of the game and clearly saw it as a training opportunity. The targets the set for themselves included scoring ten goals in ten minutes as well as letting their goal keeper score. For this reason their impressive score of 25-0 at the end of play was nothing but expected.
The first quarter of the game was by far the most exciting in terms of goals. Setting themselves the target of ten goals in ten minutes the Palatinates were on fire in terms of aggressive firing and decisive plays. Yet their abilities were so poorly matched in this game that their range of skills did not show through, given the ease with which they faced their opposition. This was epitomised in the fourth goal scored by Reilly Hannapel, Van Mildert, who after winning yet another face off jogged down the central line and, encountering no pressure, managed to get within feet of the goal to score. As the first quarter drew to a close the Palatinates had surpassed their aim, the score was 11-0 to Durham.
Going into the second quarter it was clear that Durham had slowed the pace of the game. Their competitive edge had been justifiably dulled and the usual good spirits of the team were appearing. Making good humour out of their own teams failures whilst never failing to be good sportsmen to the opposition, it seemed that in this strangely passive game the Palatinates were not taking things too seriously. Despite this they remained committed to not conceding a goal and they left the second quarter another four goals up, the score standing at 15-0.
The third and fourth quarter, regardless of the relatively few goals scored by Durham was by far the most interesting. Given their clear superiority over Sheffield, the Palatinates decided to use the game as a training opportunity. For this reason they drastically reshuffled the players, sending all defenders including the keeper into attack and all attackers into defence. For this the defenders, who had barely had a look in all game must have been thankful, and they took this rare chance to show that they too could score points. A series of aggressive goals, including three from goalkeeper Dave Crawford, Hatfield, put the team up another 10 points. The score at the end of play was 25-0.
