Dursley Vixens 6 v Stroud 1

Dursley started the new season in fine style with an excellent derby victory against local rivals Stroud.

Fielding a strong forward line up, they were able to launch an offensive as early as the 4th minute – the resulting short corner well cleared by Stroud.

Further attempts at goal by Lizzie Searle, Charlie Pretty, and Annie Morris inside the first quarter all went close, but the young strike-force were unable to cultivate a goal.

The breakthrough came on 20 minutes, with Charlie Pretty sweeping home a good cross at the back post. Encouraged by this, midfield-general Hattie Dent moved higher up the pitch, farming the ball out to all areas of the pitch, notably a deft flick on to Ellie Towler, who shot just wide, and some neat one-two’s with Eve Squire. Distribution from debutant Meg Jones was also promising, this time returning the compliment to Dent who was unable to get a shot away thanks to some good opposition defending.

A string of fine saves by the Stroud keeper kept them in the hunt, but a lapse in concentration saw Towler sweep home a long corner to make it 2-0.
Just before half time a pin-point pass out of defence by Vicki Moulder found Searle in space & she calmly picked her spot in the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance, making it 3-0 at the interval.

The “more of the same” team talk in the break was under-pinned by Annie Morris who hit the post in the first minute after a good run coming in off her wing. Pretty added her second of the game shortly afterwards to make it 4-0, before man-of-the-match Dent struck a brace - just rewards for her exceptionally high work rate throughout the match.

After such long periods going forward, Dursley suffered a bout of insomnia at the back, allowing Stroud to surge through and score a consolation goal.

The final whistle brought appreciative applause from both sets of supporters who turned out in good numbers to catch some late summer sunshine. We look forward to seeing them all in November!
