Numbers swell for Tuesday training with guest coach

“Forwards are the gnarled and scarred creatures who have a propensity for running into and bleeding all over each other.”
- Peter Fitzsimmons

SRU Development Officer Stuart Corsar dropped into Dyce RFC to coach yesterday evening's training session.

With his wealth of experience at Loosehead prop from during his amateur and professional playing days, 30 lads turned up to learn during a 90 minute session in the warm spring sunshine.

With the main focus of the session core stability, contact and key scrumaging techniques, the lads tore into the new drills, eager to impress the visiting coach.

After a thorough warm up of strength and conditioning exercises and low impact wrestling based games, positive ball carrying and tackling was the focus at the start of the session. Robust tackling and mazy quick feet was the order of the day in tight 4m square channels.

The SRU standards to basic scrum posture were then taught at a technical level, focusing specifically on core tightness, straight back and bent knees. The session progressed onto 1 vs 1 followed by 1 vs 2 scrums. Emphasis was placed on the importance of technique to maximise strength and power.

A single man scrum sled was then brought into the mix which eventually culminated in the setup of a full 8 man scrum. Stuart defined each of the specific roles and the technical detail required for each of the forward positions when it comes to packing down and working together as a unit- something which is sometimes forgotten about in the heat of a scrum practice.

As the training session drew to a close with the sun getting low in the sky, Head Coach Guy Gibson presented Stuart with a Dyce RFC training shirt, a token of thanks for his expert tuition.

Keep an eye out for future guest coach sessions next season as the club continues to build ties with experienced coaches in the local area.

Don't forget we still have two fixtures remaining before the season closes- Away to Huntly on 13th May before the season finale at home to Peterhead on 20th May. Hope to see everyone there.
