Earlsdon RFC

Mis-matched

by Neil McDonald

Earlsdon 3rds welcomed a very different Old Laurentians team to Mitchell Avenue in the league and were no match for their pacy backs.

Having been decimated by the 1st and 2nd team the Earlsdon 3rd team managed to put together 15 players to take on Old Laurentians in the league. The team was a mix of veterans and youth and included two 17 year old backs in Tim Whitefield and Billy Brock who answered the rallying call for numbers. We would have had 16 but prop Ian Matthews pulled his back throwing a stick for his dog in the morning so he couldn't play - can't believe he told me that. It was obvious from the team that OLs had brought over that it was vastly different to the one we narrowly lost to earlier in the season and hinted that it might be a tough afternoon.

The first 15 minutes of the match was hard fought and Earlsdon defended really well managing to hold the dangerous OLs backs at bay. Flo, Todd Taft and Tim Whitefield stood up in defence cutting the attackers down. Two quick tries all worked through the 9, 10 and 12 of the visitors knocked the stuffing out of home team. Earlsdon then scored a try of their own, good pressure saw Todd Taft charge down a kick with Flo picking up the loose ball to score. Billy Brock added the conversion. This was as good as it got for the home team as the class of the OLs backs told. This aided by a very useful number 7 was too much for the Earlsdon side. Several tries followed with a 30ish to 7 half time score.

The second half saw Earlsdon lose Flo (only available for a half), Todd Taft (hand) and Rory Oakman (bang on the head). Fair play to OLs they leant us one player - can't remember his name and to be honest their skipper didn't know it either (Hmm). Blev chucked his kit on and we were back up to 14. The red and whites tried manfully, the set piece wasn't a problem for the home side but the open spaces were. The skilful visitors scored at will and at 60 minutes the score was 66 - 7 and the referee blew for full time as it was over as a contest and nobody likes to get spanked by a 100 by a team that clearly isn't a normal 3rds because that could quite easily have happened.

Not sure where they got the players from but the 9 (rugby lions socks), 10, 12 and 7 would get into most first teams in our league - the referee reckoned there were a couple of ex-lions players. Not really what you want to come up against as a veteran or young 17 year old when you want a competitive game of social rugby. The team was vastly different to the one we lost to before and if they had fielded this team all season they would have walked the league. The fly half scored 30 points which I'm sure he can impress his girlfriend with.
