Sports concede in the last 5 minutes to make the score 1-2 to Ardley United

Easington Sports were narrowly defeated by their Hellenic Premier neighbours in what was a typical first pre season game of the season.

Both sides fielded strong sides and it was end to end to stuff for much of the first half. Managers Craig Pearman and Jody McKay have worked hard during the close season to put together a very strong squad with strength in depth. On this showing it is going to be hard to pick a first team squad with 20 players all gained match time yesterday all capable of starting in the first team.

After a frenetic start, Easington were forced into an early change after Matt Dixon picked up an impact injury after landing awkwardly. Niall Higgins, who has played in most positions for Easington, stepped in to deputise for the rest of the match. Ardley took the lead after 15 minutes through a strike from Danny Bone which just crept inside the post. Sports returning striker Steve Howkins then equalised with the strike of the match, smashing an unstoppable shot past Jack Hardy in goal. Howkins was one of few players to carry on playing after the Ardley defender seemed to be tripped just before the ball ran kindly to the Easington Striker. In a game of few clear cut chances, Chris Jackson out jumped the Easington defence to head goalwards in an attempt to take the lead for Ardley. CJ Grant cleared the header off the line as Higgins was stranded.

The second half was a more physical affair and Sports were right up for things with a number of players keen to impress Pearman, Lines and Woodland in the dug out. There were some excellent spells of football from both sides. Darrius Brown had a lively second half for Sports and had a shot saved comfortably by the Ardley keeper whilst James McMahon and Peter Moulder up front had half chances to take the lead for Sports. There were also impressive debuts for Ryan Markham and Chris Tillcock who will add greater mobility to the midfield this season.

On a night when the result is less important, the winning goal came in the last 5 minutes when overall Sports had been the better side. With all pre season matches it is about game time and on this showing, it could be an good season ahead.

Next home match is against Wantage Town
