EKRFC Mini Rugby Q&A

Where do we train/play?
We train al the Rugby Club in East Kilbride. Calderglen Country Park on a Sunday at 10:00 to 12:00 dependent on weather – please check with the training staff. From November to March we move indoors to the Hamilton Palace pitches on Sunday mornings from 10 am. During the summer we train on a Friday night from 6pm until 8 pm.

Home games are played where training normally occurs. Away games are played on either on Saturday or Sunday depending on our hosts and times vary. Strathaven, Hamilton, Marr (Troon), Lenzie, Allan Glens (Bishopbriggs), West of Scotland (Milngavie), GHA (Clarkston) and Glasgow Academicals (Anniesland) are a sample of some of the clubs we visit.

Who can play?
Any boy or girl of Primary School age who is prepared to run, score tries, sometimes get covered in mud and have great fun! So a 4.5 year old at school in P1 can play!

What do the kids wear?
Training Days: Tracksuits, rugby shirts, hats, gloves, boots, trainers etc: anything will do so long as you don’t mind it getting dirty or possibly ripped. Long tracksuit trousers are allowed on cold days as long as they have no metal studs or buttons. A selection of items can be purchased from the club. Please note studded boots are not allowed at Hamilton – trainers must be worn.

Match days:
Clothing: full kit. ie, rugby shirt, shorts, socks.
All of which can be purchased from our kit man, Robert MacKinnon, at an extremely subsidised cost for members!

Size Non-Member Cost Member Cost
Small £55 £30
Medium £65 £35
Large £75 £40

Please note - on match days new players get a loan of a shirt

Boots: any football boot or rugby boot will suffice. Gum shield: advisable. Mitts: many of the children wear these - there are many different types available. In cold weather especially, mitts may be a welcome addition but they are entirely optional.

What does it cost?
£120 for a year’s membership paid as £10 every month by standing order throughout the year. This covers the use of Sports Club facilities, match fees, coach training, equipment and subsidised kit costs, trips to Murrayfield (Scotland) and Firhill (Glasgow Warriors) to watch games.

What else do I need to know?
All players get a game irrespective of their experience. No one is left on the sideline.

Tips: Wrap up warm for training/match days. It’s easier to take layers of clothes off than it is to heat yourself up after/if you get cold. Please remember that rugby is essentially a winter sport, and we don’t wear the same clothing in winter as in summer (well, we hope this is true!).

I want to play - who do I contact?
You can contact Craig Steven, EKRFC Academy Coordinator on 07887 528537 or email craig@bsparchitects.co.uk Or just turn up and speak to any of the coaches before training or after a match. Further information about EKRFC as a whole, including Mini match reports and match photos, is available on www.ekrfc.co.uk
