You don't have to wait until the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to start the celebrations.

On 9 October 2013, the Queen's Baton Relay began its epic journey through the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. It won't be long before the baton returns to Scotland – and you have an opportunity to be a part of its final journey!

The baton holding Her Majesty the Queen's Message to the athletes will cross continents, terrain and time zones. Once it has completed it journey through the Commonwealth, the baton will come home to Scotland on 14 June 2014 to spend 40 days visiting communities in all 32 Local Authority areas.

On 23 July 2014 the baton will be delivered to Her Majesty at the Opening Ceremony where the 288 day relay concludes and the Games officially begin.

Up to 4,000 baton bearers are needed to help carry the baton throughout Scotland on the final leg of its journey.

Opportunities don't come much bigger than this and your help is nee3ded to find the baton bearers!

Nominate a family member, friend or someone you know for a position as a community baton bearer – or you can apply yourself.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Nominated community baton bearers will be required to meet one or more of the following criteria for activities undertaken whilst having been a resident or working in Scotland .

  • Made a positive contribution to the lives of others through community sport;
  • Undertaken voluntary work or contributed to schools or youth organisations
  • Contributed towards greater inclusion for disadvantaged or marginalised sectors of the community
  • Been a role model or mentor to youth through sport
  • Displayed a level of individual achievement against the odds
  • Made a significant contribution to their local community

HOW TO NOMINATE FOR A COMMUNITY BATON BEARER POSITION

Nominees must be UK citizens or have permission to reside in the UK and be 12 years of age or older on the date of nomination.

You must have consent from the person you want to nominate along with their current email address.

You will be asked to describe in 100 words or less, why this person meets one or more of the six selection criteria to be eligible as a community baton bearer.

Successful community baton bearers will be allocated a segment of the route within the Local Authority area in which they have made their contribution to the community.

All nomination forms will be judged in the Local Authority area indicated by the nominator and confirmed by the nominee. You may nominate someone you know to be a community batonbearer or yourself by completing the online nomination form here.

All completed applications must be received by 17:00 on 29 November 2013.
