Your Club needs you.........be a rugby referee!!

EKRFC has a desperate shortage of referees able to cover Under 16s, Under 18s and occasional 2nd XV matches. There is an acute shortage of refs in Scotland so ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HELPING? Training course run throughout the year so ..... volunteers welcome!!

We continue to have difficulties providing referees to cover matches for our Under 18s (primarily) and the 2nd XV.

The West of Scotland Rugby Referees Society has seen a decline in the number of referees available to help with club matches. If every club could provide one (or even two) extra referee for one or two matches each month, it would make a huge difference to their ability to provide referees for all fixtures.

Currently, many junior fixtures are postponed due to the shortage of referees.

At the moment, EKRFC rely on the (immense) generosity of Calum and Scott Aitken who are both qualified to referee Under 18 matches. BUT both Aikens are players, at risk of injury (hope their mum does not read this) so we need others, not least as Scott wants to play Under 18 rugby, NOT referee it!!

It would obviously help us if some of you who are already qualified to referee - albeit possibly some time ago - agreed to dust down yer boots and yer law books and volunteered to be availabel to referee some matches.

Refereeing Courses

Refereeing courses run throughout the year. Anyone interested in enrolling on a course should contact me as soon as possible. Or you can get more information on the Scottish Rugby website.

If you would like to discuss the joys of refereeing, you may wish to talk to some of our “former” referees – Robert Mackinnon, Ian Lonsdale and Alex Gilmour to name but a few. Once a referee.......always a referee........

What is involved?

Passing a Level 1 Refereeing Course enables you to referee school and club rugby matches – as well as joining your local Referee Society. You must have completed the IRB Rugby Ready on-line assessment (see details further below) before attending a Level 1 course.

The Level 1 course is 6 hours in total with a practical assessment when you are ready. The course is free but should you wish to referee for your local referee society, you will be asked to pay the annual subscription.

All attendees will receive a Law Book, Law Variation Cards and course handouts. Having passed the exam and practical assessment, you are licensed to referee up to and including Regional League 2, Schools, Youth, Mini Rugby, Tag and New Image.

IRB Rugby Ready
Anyone interested in becoming a referee should also complete the online IRB Rugby Ready qualification – a short online self-check assessment that only needs to be completed once. More information on the Scottish Rugby website.

If you wish to progress beyond Level 1 refereeing, you can do this but you need to reach a particular standard before being invited to progress. But given the shortage of referees, the Referees Society will be delighted to have you so .......next step: the international stage........!
