Wyverns shine under the lights

East London’s second team the Wyverns enjoyed success in their first game under the floodlights at the Memorial Ground in West Ham with a 50-0 home win against Romford 2s on Friday night (17 Feb).
Full back Sean Cooper opened the scoring on four minutes. When the Romford right wing failed to collect a high kick to the corner by fly-half Alex Pearmain, Cooper gathered the loose ball for a try under the posts. Fly-half Jacob Williams converted.
A Romford penalty kick hit the crossbar before Williams added a penalty for the home side on 15 minutes from in front of the posts. Cooper scored his second try on 20 minutes. With the Wyverns looking to run the ball out of defence, the full back collected the ball on his own ten-metre line and left the visitors in his wake as he ran virtually the length of the pitch to score. Williams converted.
Romford lost a man to a yellow card for a high tackle on 24 minutes and East London took advantage. An impressive attack by the backs saw right wing Sean Ellison score under the posts. Williams converted.
The pair repeated the feat give minutes later when Ellison scored in the left corner and Williams converted from wide out off the post. A penalty was missed as half-time approached.
The Wyverns began the second half as they ended the first. Full back Cooper collected a Romford clearance and raced towards the right corner. The ball found its way to hooker Ben Hogan who scored. Williams added the conversion.
The remainder of the half was one-way traffic but Romford held out until the 77th minute. When the pack was held up short of the posts, the ball came wide to replacement Corey Griffiths on the left wing and he scored in the corner. The conversion was missed. The final word was left to replacement fly-half Walter Scott who scored wide right with the conversion added by Williams to bring up 50 points.
Skipper Williams said: “It was a great performance under the floodlights and a real team effort.”
