Cyprus call up for Young Player of the Year

East London 1st XV forward Rob Yiannakou flew out today (26 April) to join up with the Cyprus national squad for their Rugby Europe Conference 2 South international in Serbia on Saturday (28 April).
It is a remarkable achievement for the 19-year-old second row who was named East London’s young player of the year for the third season in a row. It is Rob’s ability to play in a number of positions amongst the forwards that attracted the Cyprus selectors.
Rob, (pictured), is one of four new caps in the squad, nicknamed the Moufflons, a horned sheep which is the country’s national animal.
Rob said: “I’m really looking forward to it. I know I’m starting from the bench, but they have promised me at least 20 minutes. It may be more because I’ve been told I’ll be covering all the second row and back row positions.
“I qualify for Cyprus because of my grandfather. There will be about ten members of the family, including my dad Tony who also played for East London, who will be watching at home. All the players from East London will also be watching at the clubhouse.
“I am flying from Heathrow with about ten other players who play for clubs in this country. Others are flying in from Cyprus. I’ve never been abroad to play before so I hope they let me take my boots on the plane as hand luggage. I hope I don’t forget to pack my gum shield.
“Rugby is a growing sport in Cyprus. There are about three league teams and others from the military bases. The sport didn’t have a national stadium until a few years ago. The national side have won a lot of games against neighbouring teams of a similar standard and they are top of Rugby Europe Conference 2 South. I can’t wait to get out there. I’ve been practising the national anthem and can’t wait to pull on the shirt. I hope I do everyone proud.”
