Percy's Pirates plunder the points

East London's 4th XV (Percy's Pirates) travelled to Runwell 4s for their first fixture of the season (17 September).
With only 13 players, it was always going to be a hard day at the office. Canvey, who were also playing at Runwell, were good enough to lend East London some players.
Kick-off saw a hotly contested first 20 minutes with lots of attack and defence from both sides.
East London broke the deadlock with a try from one of the guest players. Stefan Ashton converted from the touchline. On the half-hour, East London were camped on the opposition 5-metre line and from a reset scrum, the ball shot out and Simon Crick at openside was the first to react. He picked up and dived over for the visitors' second try. The conversion was missed. Runwell managed a try before half-time to make the score 7-12.
The second half started with the home side dominating. East London defended well and had some good attacks. One of those attacks saw the home side pounce on a spilled ball, hack forward and score in the corner to draw level.
East London reacted and put pressure on the home side which earned a penalty, converted by Ashton, to go back in front.
Runwell scored another breakaway try to take the lead and a converted try put them further ahead at 24-15.
But East London weren't done and scored a try out wide, but failed to convert. The final quarter was a hard fought affair with both sides trying to close the game out.
With two minutes to go East London had a series of scrums in the opposition 22. Skipper Jeremy (Percy) Carson, took a ball from the breakdown and drove over with three Runwell players hanging from him. Stefan Ashton again added the conversion from the touchline to stretch the lead to three points at 24-27 to the visitors.
East London's vice-chairman Simon Crick said: "It was a great game played in a real rugby atmosphere. Thanks to both Canvey Island and Runwell for lending us players at the start and as injuries took their toll."
