7 Tries in the sunshine

The Dragons made their home debut in the new NCL summer competition and rewarded the sizable crowd with 2 points. It was the first time since June that the Dragons main field had been played on since the extensive regeneration work on the field and the players certainly enjoyed playing on the lush surface.
The visitors from Warrington were the first on the score sheet when they benefited from 3 set which resulted in a try in the corner before the Dragons had even touched the ball. When the Dragons did eventually get hold of the ball they began to stretch Crosfields and the gaps began to appear. One of the gaps was exploited as Arnold Mawere danced his way in from the wing to centre field before passing inside for Richard Colley to score the first Dragons try, Ade Mulcahy converted. He duly obliged with a second conversion when Lee Whiteley burrowed his way over at the foot of the post for the Dragons second try.
It was all the Dragons but chances went begging with a few misdirected passes but they did add to their tally when experienced centre Leigh Joyce showed his strength and shrugged of the defenders before slipping the pass out to wingman Shaun Upson who finished expertly in the corner. H/T 16-4
The Dragons kept up their supremacy in the second period and soon had the scoreboard ticking again when prop forward Daz Fisher stepped his way through the visitors defence like a ballerina before putting Richard Colley in for his second try in a sweeping 50 metre play, Ade Mulcahy converted. The open rugby was starting to flow and crisp passing saw centre John Talbot hit a great line and sythe through for a try by the post, once again Ade Mulcahy added the extras. A one on one steal by Ade Mulcahy saw him race 90 metres only for the ref to rule out the try for double movement. But the crowd didn’t have long to wait for the next try as an Ade Mulcahy put Leigh Joyce through the gap and the centre cantered down field before coolly feeding Cain McVitie who clinically finished the 60 metre move.
The Dragons had scored 34 points without reply but Crosfileds showed that they were still here and wanting to compete when they once again crossed wide out. The Dragons then hit Crosfields with another long range try as the outstanding Ryan Denton ran a superb line off a Ade Mulcahy pass and hared down field before returning the ball to Ade Mulcahy for the try. Crosfields did have the last word with another try in the corner.
The Dragons starting forwards laid a good platform and the interchange forwards of the James brothers and Dodds added impact to the Dragons game. Ryan Denton covered every inch of the park and deservedly took the players M O M, but it was Ade Mulcahy who was awarded the official NCL M O M.
The Dragons will face a much sterner test on Saturday when they are at home once again, this time to table topping Ovenden from Halifax.
Eastmoor would like to say a big thank you who kindly donated £100 to the Craig Hodgson appeal.
