Easton 3 Thetford Rovers 1
2019 starts with a win thanks to second half goals.
With 2019 now upon us we welcomed Thetford Rovers to The College for the first game of the new year. With a run of three games without a win to finish 2018 we knew getting three points here was crucial. Beanie missed the game through illness however we were able to welcome Wheeler back to the squad after missing over three months with a knee injury. Raffa was also named amongst the subs despite waiting for an operation on a foot injury.
A relatively calm but gloomy day greeted us as we kicked off the game and had the lions share of the ball in the early stages but with nothing really to show for it as both midfields cancelled each other out. We did manage to win a couple of early corners but nothing came from either. The opening goal however did arrive on 15 minutes as George collected a loose ball 25 yards out and saw his effort take a slight deflection before nestling in the top corner giving the Thetford keeper no chance.
We were back on the front foot from the kick off and had another good 5 minute spell of play in the Thetford half but with no more goals to show for it the visitors started to grow into the game and had their best spell of the game and caused some real problems for the Easton back line. They capped this with a deserved goal just before half time when the lively Hemming twisted and turned in the Easton box before finding the far corner of Baz's goal as half time loomed.
An enforced half time change saw Baz replaced by Cissell in the Easton goal and Rob entered the fray. The second half started as a much more open game with both teams intent on taking the lead. Ben was forced into an early save before Rob and Hayden saw efforts from distance fly wide.
Rob again went close as he was played in on goal but his lob dropped agonisingly wide of the Thetford goal before Cissell again saved well, first down low to his left and then when Thetford raced through 1 v 1.
Wheeler was introduced from the bench with 25 minutes to play and was he was quickly involved in the game as some neat passing between him and Matty H saw the latter fire a cross across the front of the Thetford goal but no one could get a telling touch. Wheeler did however have his moment with 20 minutes to play as Rob fed the Easton wide man on the right of the area and rifled a first time effort into the top corner to make it 2-1.
Aggy and Al were having a solid half in the Easton back line but Al did see yellow for a late tackle on a Thetford man before he was then brought down and another yellow was shown to a visiting player. Thetford were still fighting for a way back into the game and forced a couple of corners of their own but the Easton back line held firm.
Raffa made a surprise appearance off the bench and was instantly in the action as he collected a pass from Wheeler before laying off to Rob who himself laid off to George in on goal and he made no mistake finding the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
The visitors frantically searched for a way back into the game but a combination of solid defending and game management saw the ref bring the game to an end.
