Watton Utd 2 Easton 2
Can you do it on a cold, wet and windy night in Watton though?
After Saturdays resounding win against Acle Res we had our first mid week game of the season and a second visit to Watton so far this season after a win on penalties in the league cup first following a 3-3 draw. Watton were the only side to take three points from us at home so far this season as well and also the only team to stop us scoring in the league so we knew we were in for a tough night.
Luca and Jordy were missing from the weekends squad due to work so Raffa and Wheeler returned to the side. The weather was wet and windy on arrival at the ground but just before kick off the heavens really opened and 90 minutes of biblical rain was to follow!
With a strong wind in our faces as well as the driving rain Watton got the game under way and giving a clue to how they would play the opening half they immediately clipped a long pass to the lively front man but he couldn't quite wrap his foot round the ball to find a telling cross. Both teams were dealing with the surface well as it started to cut up early on with the rain turning it into a mud bath quick quickly.
Watton were on the front foot in the opening 15 minutes or so and took the lead when a good cross from the right was just too high for Aggy and the front man sent a good header low into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. This finally sparked us into life and we spent the next 15 minutes peppering the home goal with George, Beanie, Norm, Aggy, Raffa and Wheeler either seeing efforts saved or off target as we looked for a way back into the game.
With the clock approaching half a hour we levelled the game for the first time on the night. George managed to wriggle free of the right wing back and was scythed down earning the home player a booking at the same time. Wheeler then delivered a pin point cross into the area and the ball broke to Lewi who poked home to make it 1-1.
Taylor had to show safe hands twice in quick succession as he smothered two further Watton chances and while we were controlling the possession high up the pitch we were not really giving the home keeper anything to really test him despite good build up play.
The second half started like the first with Watton on the front foot early and the retook the lead just 5 minutes into the half as a well weighted through ball was latched onto by the Watton striker and despite attention from Aggy he slotted home to make it 2-1. Watton again then dropped in and seemed content to try and hold their lead but again the lead was not to last.
15 minutes later Wheeler picked up the ball on the right hand side and after cutting inside onto his left foot he found the corner of the net coolly to restore parity once again. This then opened up a game which would see a frantic and fully committed last 25 minutes from both sides.
It was Watton who tried their luck first as the striker again got away but saw his effort sneak an inch wide of the far post and with 15 minutes to play he went one better when he found himself one on one with Taylor but after rounding the Easton keeper he seemed to second guess himself and the opportunity was gone.
The last 10 minutes then belonged to us as we pushed for a winner. Firstly Wheeler and George forced the home keeper into saves and Lewi saw a header flicked wide. With 5 minutes to play George then drove towards goal and his low effort finally beat the keeper but unfortunately for us it didn't beat the far post and was cleared for a corner. Rob and Wheeler then saw efforts narrowly clear the crossbar in the closing minute but we couldn't quite nick the three points.
All in all a really good point at a tough place to go in horrendous conditions. If we had the luxury of an extra 5 minutes I think we would have got the winner but it wasn't to be. Watton will feel that they were good value for at least a point as well and after 3 good games between the two of us it finished with a win each and a draw. All the best to them for the rest of their season.
