Martham 2 Easton 2
Second game in three days sees an open game finish even.
Following Wednesday nights gruelling 2-2 draw away at Watton we made our way to the coast today to take on a Martham side that have been riding high in the league for the majority of the season so far.
With knocks a plenty after midweek we were missing no fewer than 5 regular squad members but Jahi came into the squad while home from uni and Matty Fell came into the squad at late notice for his first involvement since a serious knee injury 16 months ago.
Martham started the game the much better side and were immediately on the front foot and we couldn't get a hold on the game in any way in the opening stages. A period of frantic play in the opening 15 minutes were capped when Al and Aggy had a moment of indecision between them and the ball broke to a home player who cooly finished high into Taylor's net to give them the lead. We were struggling to get any sort of passing game going on a very tough pitch and Taylor had to be alert to stop another Martham chance as a jaded looking Easton side struggled to get a grip on the game.
Parity was actually restored with our first effort on target with 25 minutes on the clock as a good free kick into the area from Al around the halfway line was headed back across goal by Lewi and Aggy fired home from close range to get us back on terms even though we probably hadn't deserved it. This finally sparked us into life and a good 15-20 minute spell followed. Rob struck a good volley from 18 yards but the home keeper was equal to it and from the resulting corner an effort was cleared off the line as we turned up the pressure.
The lead finally came just 3 minutes before half time when a lovely floated ball from George saw Raffa in an offside position but he held his run and Rob, who had come from an onside position rifled the ball into the far top corner giving the keeper no chance for his 8th goal of the season.
The second half began as the first had ended with Easton on the front foot and we had the chance to extend our lead with a free kick 20 yards from goal but George slipped at the vital moment. This proved to be crucial as the centre half slammed the ball clear and the ball flicked off an Easton head for a Martham corner from which a wicked delivery could only be headed into his own net by Norm as he tried to clear.
This set up an interesting last 40 minutes of the game with both sides having chances to take all three points. Plenty of Martham corners were handled by the visiting defence and good stops from Taylor along with blocks from Alex, Aggy and Al all played their part. We then had chances of our own with Jahi seeing two efforts blocked superbly when well placed.
Two draws in a week that elicit totally different responses. Wednesday we had to fight for everything we got and could have nicked a win whereas today the effects of that effort saw us ride our luck to take a good point at a tough ground. Swings and Roundabouts as they say.
