Easton 5 Mattishall Res 2
A hateful of missed chances but still a thoroughly deserved win.
After last weeks weather related postponement away to Blofield Reserves we were back at home against local neighbours Mattishall Res today. Mattishall actually train next door to us during the week so we were greeted by plenty of familiar faces and what looked like a big squad for the visitors to pick from.
We had four regular first team players in Alex, Ian, Lewi and Raffa missing from the match day squad so Wheeler and George Tallent came back into the squad with Rob taking up an unfamiliar role at right back for the day with Jordy moving across to left back.
Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half we started the game well with plenty of possession in the mattishall half without too much end product to show for it. The first opening came and went on 10 minutes when a deep cross to the back post found Aggy who headed back across goal but the Mattishall keeper managed to flick the ball away from George as it looked like he would put us in front. Despite still controlling the ball in the opposition half there hadn't been a clear effort on goal as the clock hit 20 minutes but out of nowhere Luca fed the ball into George's feet and he steadied himself before finding the top corner from 20 yards to open the scoring.
Mattishall then kicked into gear and should have been level within 5 minutes of the opener. A long ball from the visiting left back beat everyone and set the forward away but Taylor stood up strong and saved well to keep us in front. The game was largely being played out in midfield as the half wore on and despite controlling large parts of the play we couldn't find another goal before half time.
The second half got underway with the away side coming out at pace and forcing a couple of corners in the opening minutes but they couldn't get a telling touch as we were defending our lines well but with the game starting to look under control again mattishakll got themselves back on terms. A through ball that looked too heavy wasn't dealt with fully and after not giving up his chase the Mattishall forward nipped in to roll the ball home for 1-1. This looked to give the visitors something to hold on to but within 5 minutes we got ourselves back in front when superb work by Luca at the byline saw him beat his man twice before squaring for George to tap home from 5 yards.
This seemed to take the steam out of Mattishall slightly and all of a sudden 2-1 became 3-1 as Hayden robbed a defender following a throw in and rolled the ball under the keeper to extend our lead 5 minutes after we had gone back in front. Almost straight from kick off the woodwork then came to the away sides aid when Jordy struck the post from 18 yards and Luca then hit the crossbar from 30 yards after the keeper had initially cleared his lines.
Chances were now going at regular intervals as George was foiled by the keeper after being put through 1v1 and shortly afterwards he saw an effort go the wrong side of the post when well placed. He wasn't to be denied his hat trick for long though as he nodded home from Luca's corner with 75 minutes on the clock.
Mattishall then got themselves on the score sheet themselves as the Easton back line got an offside call wrong and the forward slotted home well to make it 4-2 and again they upped the pressure for 5 minutes forcing another couple of corner that they could not convert. George then soon added his fourth when he rounded the onrushing keeper before slotting home for 5-2 late in the game. There was still time for the woodwork to rescue the visitors again as George headed against the bar from a corner in added time.
A good solid win and we move onto an away trip to Yelverton next Saturday.
