Missed Chances Prove Costly
The first XV travelled to old rivals Ashfield in the league. Ashfield having been relegated the previous season are looking bounce straight back and Retford knew they would be in for a tough test. The game started at a frantic pace with both teams making handling errors. Retford made the more controlled start and began to find some rhythm. However, after stealing a quick lineout Warings pass was intercepted by the Ashfield winger to run in the first try of the day. Converted well from the touchline to give the home team a 7-0 lead.
The next phase of the game saw Retford take the upper hand with the new lineouts working well and the backs running good angles to break through the Ashfield defence. A number of injuries then halted progress with Dan Preece, Simon Phillips and Luke Hewgill all having to be replaced due to injuries.
The home team took advantage of the changes and while Retford were adjusting they scored to make the score 14-0. The Ashfield scrum half took several tap penalties and took advantage of the retreating Retford players scoring in the corner to put the home team up 19-0 going into half time.
The second half belonged to Retford with the forward pack dominating in the scrums and not letting Ashfield clear their lines easily. After a well-controlled maul Fielding wriggled one way then the other dropping down over the try line. 19-5.
Some strong running from David Howard and Joshua James Freeman saw the away side keep the pressure on the home team try line. The defence stood firm and after two disallowed tries for being held up from Harry salathiel and David Howard clearly making contact with the base of the post. It was not to be Retfords day. The home with just four minutes to play scored a breakaway try to rub salt in the wounds adding the bonus point try. Joshua James Freeman had two excellent chances with the home team bundling him into touch just in time.
The final result was 26-5, however this did not reflect the effort of the team with 1-15 putting in superb effort. Man of the matches went to David JR Howard and Joshua James Freeman. Also, a mention to Harry salathiel for an excellent afternoon at the lineout. Donkey goes to Chris Marsden for forgetting his boots! Retford return to Ordsall Road next week hosting Boston RUFC.
