East Retford 1st XV 22 Pts V Tupton 1st XV 27 Pts
Retford played hosts to the high flying top of the league side in Tupton who had only suffered one defeat all season.
Retford knew that they had the firepower to match their opponents but could they execute a game plan to better their visitors.
Retford were under pressure from the off as the visitors came out of the blocks well using their weight and size to good advantage. The first points came from a sucker punch of a move after a quick tap from the penalty the scrumhalf went through the middle of the ruck to score the opening converted try.
Retford had to sharpen up and did so some five minutes later as they worked down field to receive a penalty ably converted by Dan Preece. Another five minutes elapsed before Tupton nullified the three points with a well struck penalty of their own but Retford were starting to gel after the two week layoff. With some great play going forwards Retford moved the ball out wide to the right before switching the play back the other way and when Joe Helliwell came around the corner he powered over for an excellent team effort try.
Following this Retford turned the ball over and began to attack from deep in their own half, Josh Nicklin found the gap and set off at pace with Ali Waring close in support and as the Tupton defence were drawn to Waring it was Nicklin who continued his run to the line for a nice counter attacking run of play and with Preece adding the extras Retford took the lead.
With time running out on the half it was Tupton who had the last word or even last kick receiving yet another penalty they converted from long range to close the gap to just two points, halftime score fifteen to thirteen with Retford at this stage dominating in attack but giving up too many penalties when defending.
Tupton started the better once again from the restart having much the better of the opening exchanges and with Retford on the back foot it was the Tupton inside centre who crashed through to score under the posts and with the conversion added Tupton took the lead one that they would not give up for the rest of the fixture. Retford had a chance to cut the deficit with a penalty from just ten metres inside opposition territory but the ball faded away to the right and fell just short.
Tupton through everything at Retford’s defence going all out to secure the win through their forwards but Retford held them out before a stray boot by Dave Ruzicka saw him receive a yellow card and ten minutes in the bin. Tupton seized their chance having been held up at least twice they eventually were awarded a try once again converting. Retford went all out attack to try to save the fixture and although a quickly taken penalty resulted in Dave Howard crashing over and the conversion by Mick Sykes Tupton managed to run the clock down through their forwards.
Man of the match awarded by Tupton went to Mikey Phillips at scrum half and to Harry salathiel at hooker with the donkey being awarded to Dave (Big Foot) Ruzicka. Next week away to Worksop in the league kick off 2.15pm.
