East Retford 1st XV 29 Pts Vs Chesterfield 1st XV 3 Pts
Retford played hosts to fourth place Chesterfield one place below them knowing full well that a good start was required as when they played them back in November it was Chesterfield that blew Retford away inside the first half.
What a start it was with Chesterfield on the first attack the ball was ripped from them and shipped down the line. Some excellent stepping by J J Freeman avoiding all his would be defenders passed the ball inside to Mikey Phillips another timely pass onto his brother Simon Phillips and an opening try converted by Dan Preece inside five minutes.
Retford playing with some control managed to snuff out any danger from an attacking Chesterfield side with their scrum half being kept under wraps not letting him have the freedom he was looking for. Chesterfield came on the attack once more and again was turned over this time Mark Pymm making the yardage with a great clearance kick.
On the twenty minute mark the forwards who were starting to dominate proceedings drove for the line only to be stopped short but Mikey Phillips was on hand to go round the corner for an opportunist try. Some five minutes later Chesterfield got themselves on the scoreboard with a well struck penalty awarded for a player joining the ruck in at the side and they started to pull the team back into the game and but for some great defence would have added to their points tally. Half time score twelve points to three.
After the talk at half time being one of controlling the ball and the tempo of the play Retford proved themselves to be unstoppable in the second half. They got off to a great start with some direct running by Pymm releasing Luke Osborne to race for the corner. He was stopped short but somehow managed to keep in play keeping the ball alive and M Phillips was on hand again to finish the move off with a try.
With the forwards on top play was always on the front foot and the ball set up again with Phillips looking like he would get a third passed inside to his brother to score again converted by Preece. Retford kept up this control and finished the game off in style with a play that most of the players were involved in and the captain rounding it off as Dan Preece went over for a try in the corner.
It had been an superb team effort with a bonus point win and both the Phillips players grabbing a brace of tries the Men of the Match awarded by the opposition went to Simon Phillips in the forwards and Joshua Freeman in the backs with the Donkey being shared by the second row partnership of the chuckle brothers Matt Watt and Dave Ruzicka who managed to have a rest period both collecting yellow cards. Next weeks match against Mellish at home in the semi final of the Notts Cup.
