East Retford 1st XV 49 Pts V Boston 1st XV 8 Pts
Retford played host to Boston this week a team languishing just one place below them in the league.
So Retford although playing at home expected a hard fought match and in parts that what they got but some excellent play saw Retford gain their fifth bonus point win on the trot.
They soaked up the early pressure where the visitors seemed quite pleased with their progress up the field of play before Retford turned the ball over to show Boston how it should be done. Run after run saw Retford make ground before the ball was passed down the line to the wing where Josh Freeman was on hand to finish the job with opening try in the corner.
From the kick off Retford tried to run out of defence but were caught in possession and Boston slotted over the ensuing penalty to close the gap. However Retford were soon to switch the pressure onto the opposition and with solid play got over the line only to held up but Captain Dan Preece converted two penalties to further the cause.
From the next kick off it was Preece who made a superb diagonal run and looked like he would go all the way to the line. The Boston fullback had other ideas and put in a great tackle but a slight of hand pass saw the ball go to Jordan Mee who raced for the line to score. To round of the half another counter attack by the back division produced some good handling and the ball found its way to the hands of Josh Nicklin who sold an outrageous dummy to go over for a try, converted by Preece for a twenty three point to three lead at the break.
From the start of the second half there was ten minutes of pretty frantic throw the ball anywhere type of rugby where neither side took advantage of the other but Retford settled into their groove and was soon adding points onto their total. At this stage Ed Driver got on replacing Ruzicka in the second row and his first action was to receive the ball in open play as a gap appeared and he raced to the line for the first points of the half.
This was followed with a steady procession of points as Nicklin made another superb run from a move in the backs passing the ball inside for Simon Phillips to finish off the converted try. Then good support play and solid defence saw the ball moved swiftly to brother Mikey Phillips to score in the corner again converted.
Boston then attempted another sortie on the Retford line and Driver was shown a yellow for a high tackle before the Boston pressure broke through for them to collect a consolation try. With only minutes remaining and Retford pinning Boston back on their own line they managed to clear the danger with a deep kick only for J J Freeman to collect the ball and run over at least three people to score a great individual try, converted by Preece and finish the game off in style.
Men of the match nominated by Boston were Fly half Ben Wilson in the backs and Simon Phillips in the forwards but both Josh Nicklin in the backs and Ed Bailey-Hobbs playing out of position at hooker had brilliant games all round.
