East Retford 1st XV 18 Pts vs Mellish 1st XV 14 Pts
Retford played hosts to their rivals Mellish who came to the Retford fortress
On the back of nine wins on the trot and were determined to continue their winning spree but met a determined Retford who were eleven wins on the bounce and looking for number twelve.
Mellish came out of the blocks and through everything including the kitchen sink at the home side and after just ten minutes powered over the line through their forwards to score the opening try and adding the conversion to an early seven point lead.
Apart from loosing backrow Jordan Mee to a rib injury the rest of the half was all the visitors who just kept bouncing and bumping the bodies against probably the best defensive performance of the season as Retford weathered the storm and kept them to that early try and a half try score of seven points to nil.
In the second half Retford got their wheels in motion and good pressure saw Captain Daniel Preece add two penalties to close the gap to just one point. This inspired the team and good ball won by the forwards then moved down the backs saw Luke Hewgill slide in at the corner for a well worked team try.
Retford were soon back on the front foot and a great break by Dave Howard backed up by Ed Bailey-Hobbs saw the latter scamper away from the would be defence to score, converted by Preece. Retford had some breathing space but a late rally by the visitors saw them use their weight and powered over for their second converted try.
Retford kicked deep and kept Mellish in their own half for the rest of the time which they ran down the clock to claim their twelfth game on the trot. Men of the match picked by the Mellish players were Josh Nicklin in the backs for a fine performance and Simon Phillips who is the best form of his career so far.
