East Retford 2nd XV 28 Pts V Lincoln 3rd XV 15 Pts
Retford played host to Lincoln this week in a pennant league game and as the game was about to kick off it was apparent that Retford were ready for the challenge ahead.
The game started and Retford were soon dominating most of the play attacking with strong running from the forwards and the backs keeping the ball well and starving the opposition of the any possession. Retford were keeping hold and using the ball well and making good yardage before Joseph Helliwell fought his way through several opposition players to rumble over the line, try converted.
Retford didn’t let up the pressure and went on the attack again in the form of Andy Daniels finding a gap to cruise through to score once more, again try converted. Just as the whistle was about to blow Lincoln capitalized on some lazy work and scored an unconverted try.
With some half time inspiration, the second half started strong and with the Lincoln team losing a man through the form of a yellow card Retford capitalized as full back Simon Palmer
cut through the defence with some excellent lines and went over to score a converted try.
However, the balance just shifted as the Lincoln players came back into the match Retford also lost a player to a yellow card and it wasn’t long until Lincoln went over to score a second unconverted try. The game continued with good attacking and defensive play going on from both teams until a loose tackle found the Lincoln winger scoring in the corner giving them their third unconverted try of the day.
Retford were not finished and a strong individual run by Rupert Innes
saw him cut through Lincoln’s defensive line to score another try which was again converted. This was the last of the points to be scored and Retford won the game with the final score being twenty-eight to fifteen.
Men, of the match for the forwards went to liam dove
for both exemplary attacking and defence work and for the backs it went to Rupert Innes
for strong running throughout the game.
