Retford played host to Nottingham casuals in the semi-finals of the cup this week the day was hot with a slight breeze and the home team came out strong as the whistle blew.
Retford started strong with the forwards running strong lines and using the pod running to cover yard after yard this combined with some strong running from the backs breaking tackles found Retford mostly camped in the opposition half, it wasn’t long until James Wright found himself going over the line from the back of a ruck to get Retford first points of the game.
The game restarted the same way very much however a few penalties and some missed tackles allowed Nottingham to go over and convert their try putting them in the lead. The game went on being a very fair contested battle with both teams putting in good offence and defence however it was Retford that got over the line next in the form of the skipper Kurt Spencer, try converted by Jack Thomas.
Just when Retford thought they could take a minute Nottingham came right back to score again try unconverted putting the score line equal as the first half ended. With some fresh legs brought on Retford were eager to get the second half underway.
The second half began the same way very much with a strong even battle been fought between the two teams for most of the second half both showing strong running and great defences until Retford found themselves having to dig deep as shaun dove was sent off for a late shoulder charge leaving Retford a man down for ten minutes.
Retford’s defence dug deep and even a man down James Wright found himself going over the line once again try converted by Jack Thomas. It was looking good for Retford even with a man down however a chip over the top allowed the score line to become close once more, Try unconverted.
This was the last of the points to be scored leaving the final score Retford nineteen Nottingham casuals seventeen. Man of the match for the forwards went to Michael Green for some great all round work in both attack and defence, for the backs went to Dan Lodge for a solid performance.
On to the final next Sunday 29 April against Newark at Nottingham’s Lady Bay Ground – 1 Holme Road, West Bridgford kick off 12 Noon.
