Chris Ellerby took the reigns on Saturday, overseeing an assured 6-2 win over Armthorpe Welfare, in the absence of Sean Regan and Des Hamilton.

Following the final whistle, Chris shared his thoughts on the game and starting the New Year perfectly; "For an hour of it, we were very good, it was an even game for 10 minutes then in the last 20 minutes we just stopped."

"I know the lads need to get their fitness back after Christmas because there will have been a lot of food and drink. All in all, you can't really complain about a 6-2 win!"

Offensively, The Eagles could have offered even more than their six goals, which Chris picked up on; "We weren't clinical enough. Towards the end, too many people were trying to get in on the act, where as if we'd have played the more unselfish ball, we could have been looking at scoring 10."

To end the game conceding twice was a slight disappointment for Chris and the players, as he stated; "The lads knew themselves. We went into the changing rooms at the end and everyone was a bit flat because they knew that they let their standards slip for the last 20 minutes."

He added; "Armthorpe should never have had a chance to score one let alone two. We switched off, but at 6-0 it's hard for the lads to keep that intensity because they know the games dead. We'd made three changes, and it was a bit expected but still disappointing to concede twice."

The Eagles' last three games had seen them put in performances much lower than the standards they have set recently, which they needed to fix.

Chris acknowledged that this game gave them that chance, which the players took; "If it had finished at 6-0, it puts a marker down. At 6-2, there's bits to pick out but it's splitting hairs to dig the players out over that."

He went on to say; "It is a marker to say we're back at it a little bit, but we've still got another two or three gears to go up, especially considering it's a tough month so the lads need to be back on it as soon as possible."

As Chris briefly mentioned, January is going to be a tough month for Eccleshill as they prepare to face multiple teams battling them for promotion spots.

Talking about what The Eagles need to do this month, Chris stated; "It's all about results this month. We need to make sure we're still in the promotion picture come the end of January, which gives us the momentum to push on at the end of the season."

"The goal is to get out of this league, and picking up more results like today gives us the best chance to do exactly that!"

Finally, Chris discussed the returns of long term absentees Tom Rose and Ben Hardy to action, and how important it is for The Eagles to have a full squad going into a busy period; "If you look at it, Anil (Singh) is closer to full fitness, (Chris) Lever is back in the next couple of weeks, and we have Matt Mathers to come back in."

He continued on; "The bench today was strong as it is, and we still have those three to come back in, it gives that competition for places. Each player offers something different, Tom (Rose) showed his energy going into tackles, so it looks like he's over his leg break."

"Ben (Hardy) has come back and his ankle looks okay, it's good because we have got a strong squad and they're all good lads, so there isn't any egos there. They all want each other to do well."

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they make the long trip to fellow promotion rivals Shirebrook Town, hoping to keep their form going in this difficult month.
