The Eagles saw its 10-match unbeaten run come to an end in disappointing fashion on Saturday and Charlie Flaherty reflected on the loss.

It was a bad day at the office for Eccleshill United on Saturday as the Eagles slipped from the top spot after being beaten by Glasshoughton Welfare.

A dejected Charlie Flaherty spoke honestly about the performance following the final whistle, about a game where his side was simply second best.

He said: " The mentality before the game, to be honest, I don't think we wanted it as much today for some reason. Glasshoughton, to be fair to them, they were first and second to everything today, but we allowed them to be, we just didn't play our normal game.

"Yeah, the pitch didn't suit our style of football, but we are going to have to get used to that because, in December and January, this is all we are going to be playing on. No disrespect to the ground, but with the weather that's coming we are going to have to get used to playing on surfaces like this.

"Overall today, I think we have let ourselves down massively, especially Sean, Des, and Chris because you can see how much they want to win. We want to win that much, but I don't think we got out of bed today from the first minute to the last."

The goals conceded in the game were sloppy ones, with a miscommunication causing the first and a lack of pressure allowing the second, which is something that the midfielder discussed.

Flaherty said: " It was a sloppy goal, I think it was just a mix up between Dom and Jonny but at the end of the day, Dom hasn't made many mistakes and neither has Jonny. It was just a sloppy start and it pressed on throughout the game, it's a hard one to take today, very hard to take."

The Eagles fell behind in the game for the first time since the brilliant Knaresborough Town victory, but the squad lacked the same desire and fight that saw them come from two behind to beat Knaresborough.

"Like you say, the Knaresborough game we scored three in the second half, but today, every time we pushed forward we never looked like hurting them. We had a lot more of the ball, but we didn't create any clear-cut chances and it was one of those days and you can guarantee we will put it right next Saturday," he stated.

Finally, it was next Saturday on the mind of the dynamic midfielder, in a top of the table clash with Yorkshire Amateurs, a game where Flaherty wants to see an improved performance.

He said: " I'm not taking anything away from Glasshoughton, but we just weren't at the races today. The main key now is train hard Wednesday and put it right Saturday, because we need to get back on a good run. We owe the coaches that because we can't perform like that again, it's embarrassing."
