Winning in the borders, big win at home, "Nudges", training and general activities...

Good afternoon fellow ENRFC devotee,

We (ENRFC), quite frankly, had a rather fantastic week.

Whilst the author may have enjoyed a quieter Saturday evening than some, the combination of a train trip, two big wins, two excellent training session provided by our ‘resident’ coaches and over-all a feel good factor beginning to grow around the club, you can’t help but have a smile on your face/wax lyrical following recent developments.

Anyway, read on below for your weekly review, to shake off those Tuesday blues!

On the Field

Fun fact - there were three Edinburgh teams that travelled to Gala on Saturday. Only one of them came back with a win (and for reference it wasn’t Watsonians 1st XV or A’s).

For the first time since Earlston almost two years ago we won a fixture south of the Pentlands, with the 1st XV running out 22-18 victors at Netherdale, thanks to the boot of Hugh Vermont and tries from Max Hoani (2) and Dougie Candlish.

It was an all-round excellent team performance, with both set-piece and open player vastly improved across the board after a week off. Thanks from the squad to the old boys who joined them for that rather excellent experience at the full-time whistle, though we think Brechs might have forgotten that was the third win in a row during his fantastic full-time call to arms!

If that was something to be smiled about, the 2nd XV took to the field at home against a depleted Dalkeith side, with Scott Lunn’s boys anxious to get their own back following the last few encounters against the East Lothian based side.

Northern generously donated them several of our playing contingent (a courtesy not bestowed upon ourselves previously, more than once, in recent years somewhere…), and with that pleasant and deeply satisfying good deed out the way, the visitors were well and truly put to the sword. After many, many tries, Northern ran out 84-0 winners, although thanks to the completion rules Dalkeith only concede a 28-0 defeat.

A particular highlight was Will Wlilson scoring 4 tries, which is tantamount to a cardinal sin at the club, so expect to read more about that when he returns to the Bunker in the near future.

This Week

Last week we had 44 players available for selection. This standard is something that if guaranteed week in, week out, will see us develop and see score lines like the above common practice.

Tuesday and Thursday will see Will plus Nasi and hopefully Anton join us once more, so if you can make it down as the night draw down the more successful these sessions can be.

As for the week, it’s Liberton and Dunfermilne away on Saturday. Details about transport for the latter to follow Thursday but get your availabilities in and we can see what headaches selection committee can be given this time around!

Off The Field
The Bunker held another formal event on Saturday which went well. Thanks go out to the bar-staff for sacrificing their Saturday evening and we hope our guests enjoyed themselves.

The train trip, although a short hop, was remarkably scenic and beautiful – that was just some of the rather fantastic outfits designed by our newbies. It was as messy as ever and the majority of individuals made it to the Antiquary, our lovely sponsors (SHOUT OUT!) for a few or a few more than acceptable beverages into the wee hours.

Gossip

In the nickname ceremony, Hugh Vermont will know be referred to as “Nudges”, thanks to Paul Holland's mid-match inability to formulate his words.

With that, alas, until next week, adieu.

Yours in rugby,

ENRFC
