Congratulations to King's Rugby's 'King Prawns' who beat Gipsies Football Club in the Bedford Shield Final

Our 10th Annual Sevens Tournament took place on Saturday, with 18 teams playing 40+ games across our two King's Lane pitches, making this our biggest edition to date!

Egham Hollowegians were, for the first time in recent years, able to field two teams. The 'Allstar' 1st VII, buoyed by the inclusion of Kevin Barrett (former England Sevens Captain), won all their group games making it throughout to the knockout stages of the top competition with relative ease. The 'Misfits' 2nd VII meanwhile, supplemented by a large number of forwards, were placed in the 'group of death', and despite a valiant effort, picked up the Wooden Spoon.

In the Quarter Finals, the 1st VII faced the formidable Gipsies Football Club, and found themselves three tries down at half time. With nothing to lose, they played a more expansive game in the second, and brought themselves to within a score in the dying moments, but were left to rue an earlier missed conversion. The final scoreline, 21-19.

The Michael Fallon Memorial Shield Final was contested by High Wycombe Green Dragons and St Peters College Oxford Old Boys. The latter, which featured former Egham Hollowegians Centre Ollie Tomlins, had previously won the competition, but were no match for their opponents who dispatched them with relative ease to take home the second-tier silverware.

The Bedford Shield Final was contested by the KCS Old Boys 'King Prawns', a late addition to the tournament lineup, and the aforementioned Gispises Football Club. This proved to be a tempestuous affair, with both teams having players sent to the bin. The Prawns gained the man advantage at the end of the first half, when a Gipsies player was binned for an off the ball incident, and ran in three quick tries to build a commanding lead. With the six Gipsies players clearly fatigued, they never really stood a chance, and despite some surging runs found it difficult to break through. The Prawns were down to six having been penalised for cynical handling in the ruck, but with the clock almost up it didn't have the same level of impact, and thus they walked away as the 10th different competition winners.

A big thank you goes to Matthew Griffin, Greg Bailey, Victoria Crouch, Dave Pearce, Hugh Blackburn, Keith Tomasso and Hugh Blackburn for all their help on the day.
