Egremont RUFC had much to celebrate on Saturday as both senior teams recorded impressive league wins.

The 1st team travelled to Creighton with a sense of real determination to get things right after a good week of training. Egremont began impressively, with strong inter-linking play between the backs and forwards as well as a much improved handling performance after the disappointment of their previous game. The warm and dry conditions seemed to suit the urgency of the Egremont side and Creighton were unable to prevent a steady flow of first half tries from Craig Peet, Scott Hailes, Aidan Coulthard and the again impressive Liam Martin. Josh Graves also scored a try and added a conversion as Egremont turned around 27-7 ahead at half-time.

The continuity of the all-round support work and skill of the team was disrupted by a disappointing three second half sin-binnings, which allowed Creighton to add two tries in the final stages. However, by this time Jimmy Temple and Xander Bainbridge had added themselves to the lengthy Egremont scoresheet, with Craig Peet and Josh Graves completing a nine-try tally for a very impressive final scoreline of 49-19.

The second team were in home action at Bleach Green with an 18 man squad which contained a fascinating blend of youth and experience. Injured captain Barry Lister was delighted by the response of his players after they conceded an early try to visitors Workington Zebras. The Egremont forwards took a firm grip on the game by dominating the all-important battle for possession where wily veteran Alex Price was in impressive form for the home team. Strong and powerful running from the backs, where Ryan and Adam Barton were particularly notable, led to first half tries from both Bartons as well as Elliot Church and elusive runner Lee Clark. Matthew Lancaster added all four conversions in a very impressive kicking display which gave Egremont a 28-5 half time lead.

Unusually, this was how the score remained throughout the second half, as it was Workington’s turn to dominate the possession. The Egremont defence was unbeatable however, helped by a barnstorming performance from man-of-the-match flanker Will Jeffries, giving the 2nd team a final score of 28-5 and a second league win.

The 1st team face Kendal A at home on Saturday and the 2nd team make the short journey to Whitehaven.
