Egremont Rangers run out 40-30 in battle of rangers against the previously unbeaten Leigh Miners Rangers

On a sunny day in West Cumbria, Egremont Rangers were looking to build on last weekend’s cup win away at Ince Rose Bridge by beating the previously unbeaten Leigh Miners Rangers at Gillfoot Park.
The Opening exchanges as always were a real battle however it was the away side that started off the stronger and showed why they were currently unbeaten in the league. The away side were marching up the field and were soon deep within Egremont territory on a number of occasions, never the less the Egremont defence stood strong and stopped the Miners on a number of occasions.
This was until the 9th Minute when the Egremont line was breached by Miners Scrum Half Scott O’Brien darted across the line for the opening try of the game. The resulting conversion was missed by Miners. The score line 4-0 to the away side.
This opening try to the away side seemed to spur the Egremont side into action and after a good spell of play and countless Miners forced errors the Egremont side crossed on 14minutes after being awarded a scrum in good territory. Scrum Half Paul Corkhill took the ball to the line before a swift offload to the supporting Peter Bewsher allowed the big 2nd rower to cross for the home side’s first try of the game. The resulting conversion was successful by centre Ross Brookes making it 6-4 to the home side.
Egremont now had a foothold in the game and seemed to be getting on top with the away side still being forced into a number of errors, this once again allowed Egremont to have great field position and once again this was exploited when on 25 minutes a swooping play across the line allowed winger Leon Crellin to cross with ease to extend the score line out to 10-4 to the home side with the resulting kick unsuccessful.
It didn’t take long for the home side to extend their lead when on 28 minutes Captain Rhys Davies danced his way through some wood be tacklers to cross the try line for the Egremont side. The resulting kick was a formality for Brookes and the score line was now 16-4 in favour of the home side.
The Egremont side were now well and truly on top and were starting to get a roll on this once again was to prove costly for the Miners team when on 35 minutes 2nd rower Matthew Bewsher was able to touch down over the try line for the home side, the kick was once again converted by Brookes and the score line now stretched out to 22-4 for the Egremont side.
The Final 5 minutes of the half was a brilliant spectacle for any rugby league purists with Leigh Miners looking to get themselves back in the game just before half time it looked as though this was a real possibility in the final set just before the half time whistle with Miners only 10m away from the Egremont try line however just at the crucial moment the ball fell to the floor, from here the magic happened and arguably the try of the season so far was scored. With the ball on the floor Centre Brookes hacked the ball forward down field with Brookes and his winger Barnes in hot pursuit, Miners were scrambling back however Egremont continued to hack the ball 90m down the field before some silky football skills from Barnes controlled the ball for the winger to ground it on 40minutes mark after what had been a 90m foot race. Brookes managed to regain his breathe before slotting over the conversion to make it 28-4 to the home side with Egremont well and truly in the ascendency.
Never the less Miners came out in the second half with all guns blazing and went over for the first try of the 2nd half on 50 minutes when Loose forward Mick O’Boyle crossed for his first try of the afternoon the resulting conversion was slotted over by Miners Fullback Youlds to make the score line 28-10.
However it didn’t take the Home side long to reinstate their half time lead when on 54 minutes 2nd rower Matthew Bewsher hit the line at pace and crossed for his second try of the afternoon under the sticks, an easy conversion for Brookes followed the score line now 34-10 to the Egremont side.
This try seemed to re-start the Miners side that started to get on top in the contest and on 57 minutes were able to cross for a simple try when centre Adam Thomason was able to cross the line for the away side. The kick was missed 34-14 to the Egremont side however this seemed so flick a switch in the Miners side and they began to get a roll on with their big pack making easy yards down the pitch. This roll on didn’t take long to get its desired affect for the away side when on 60 minutes opposite centre Brad Hargreaves crossed for the Miners 34-18 now and the away side starting to feel like they still had a chance in this game.
The game was now on a knife edge if Egremont were to score the next try it would certainly be game over in terms of result however if Miners were to cross next then it was well and truly game on. On 65 minutes it was the latter which came to the forefront when loose forward Mick O’Boyle crossed for his second try of the afternoon the reaction of the crowd and the away dug out told it all it was well and truly game on with 15 minutes remaining it was still any bodies game, With Youlds adding the extras 34-24, now only a 10 point ball game.
Never the less Egremont began to stop the roll on and on 73 minutes it looked as though they had sealed the win when loose forward and man of the match Kieran Glenn crossed for the home side pushing the score line out to 38-24 with only 7 minutes left on the clock.
However with a side as good as Miners this was not to be the case when on 76 minutes Miners Stand off Shaun Dowie crossed and with Youlds adding the extra’s it was only an 8 point ball game with 4 minutes to go and a thrilling end was to follow.
Unfortunately the end fizzled out and when in the final couple of minutes miners were reduced to 12 men for descent Egremont swiftly moved to slot over a penalty kick to give us our final score line of Egremont Rangers 40-30 Leigh Miners Rangers.
