Dale Williams scored the match winner in extra time of the F A Vase game at Rocester to take Ellesmere Rangers into the next round of the cup.

For much of the game it was an uphill struggle for the Ellesmere men. Keeper Andrew Pryce's laps of concentration after eight minutes allowed the ball to slip through his fingers from an opportunist shot from Chris Owen and into the net to put the hosts one up. He was however able to more than make amends for his slip up as he made several superb saves during the game culminating in a superb effort in the dying seconds of extra time when he was able to get down low to his right side to save a shot struck through a sea of legs.

Rangers were in fact two goals down within the first quarter of an hour when a deflected shot from Chris Sterling found its way across the goal and into the net for the second.

Despite the score line Rangers were far from out of the game. Some good pressure resulted in a corner and Ian Rowlands was able to evade his marker and a trade mark header put Rangers back into contention. He was unlucky a few moments later when he was able to get onto a Catherall long throw but this time saw the effort narrowly go over the bar. Rangers were not to be denied and seconds later a pinpoint clearance from keeper Pryce found Tom Ward who was able to put strike partner Anwar Alubon through to level the score. For the remaining few minutes of the first half Rocester piled on the pressure and Rangers were forced to defend manfully.

The second half began with both sides striving to break the deadlock; both strikers Ward and Alugbon had good chances. Alugbon hit the bar and had a goal disallowed and a yellow card presented for handling the ball, and Ward narrowly missed when he put himself in a good position after breaking through down the right side. The game swung end to end neither side was able to find the net despite their best efforts, so the ninety minutes saw a two each score line and extra time.

Extra time again saw more than its share of thrills and controversy. Alugbon was put through in the early part of extra time and a collision with the Rocester keeper did not result in the penalty that everyone was expecting but a second yellow card for Alugbon and Rangers down to ten men for the remainder of the game. Rocester piled on the pressure once again and Pryce truly made amends for the earlier mishap to keep the score level. Then from a breakaway Williams energetically carried the ball and saw his shot saved by the keeper, but made no mistake with his rebound slotting the ball in off the post, giving Ellesmere the winner and putting them through to the next round of the F.A vase.
