Ellemere Rangers made the trip to the Midlands for their F.A Vase match against Walsall wood. In all competitions this was the fifth consecutive away game for them.

The first half saw both sides play with a degree of caution, Rangers had the majority of the possession and although Dale Williams on the left wing was giving the Walsall Wood defenders huge problems the strikers were unable to get to any of the crosses he was able to provide. Dan Griffiths and Kevin Renshaw had strikes on goal but were unable to trouble Adam Dennant the Walsall keeper.

Rangers upped the tempo in the latter stages of the half and the lively Williams broke through with a good opportunity but saw his shot drift over the bar. Jamie Williams also had a good opportunity when Joe Rogers fed a well timed pass through for him to run onto but again the advancing Dennant was equal to the task.

The second half saw Rangers exert good pressure, Walsall keeper Dennant had to pull all the stops out when Ian Rowlands struck a well placed shot that looked destined to break the deadlock until a finger tip save saw it fly over the bar for a corner. Rangers still had good possession but were nearly undone when a breakaway saw Lewis Taylor Boyce get an opportunity but fortunately for Ellesmere drove it over the bar.

The game looked destined for extra time until Rangers were awarded a free kick in the last few minutes, Matt Fletcher lofted the ball into the box, where Dan Fletcher pushed Ian Rowlands over as he set himself for the header giving the referee little option but to award a penalty. Kevin Renshaw stepped up and his shot low to the keepers right side saw Rangers through to the next round of the cup. The next round will see Ellesmere play away against either Bustleholme or Bartley Green.

The Ellesmere Rangers next home game is on saturday at 3.00 against Gresley. Gresley are renowned for bringing with them superb away support so a special effort from all Rangers fans will give this game a superb atmosphere and hopefully a record crowd.
