Ringwood can boast it has one of the best local rugby clubs in the country following last week’s announcement at the Expo Business Awards Dinner at Twickenham.
Prior to the event, Ellingham and Ringwood RFC knew it was shortlisted to the last 6 in the prestigious ‘junior – (community) – club of the year’ category and then learnt it was bringing the award home to Hampshire.
The EXPO awards recognise achievement and success from both the professional and grass-roots game and 'Junior Club of the Year' is awarded to a non-professional community club that has shown commitment and creativity in the day-to-day running and future development of its club.
EXPO recognised Ellingham and Ringwood’s hard work and commitment over many years. These included the successful delivery and move to a new ground, the recent award of the RFU Whole Club seal of approval, the growing mini and junior section providing rugby coaching and development from Under 6s to colts , the creation of Under 13,15 & 18 girls’ teams and 3 senior sides. Presenting the award, former Bath forward and USA captain Dan Lyle, also paid tribute to the club’s fantastic community focus, which sees fund raising events being held at the ground and collaboration with local schools, other sports groups and businesses.
The delegation collecting the award on behalf of the club were delighted and admitted to a few nerves in the face of tough competition from Guernsey, Minchinhampton, Mombasa, Spalding clubs and fellow Hampshire club Overton.
Club chairman Peter Pearce said: “I was absolutely shocked when our name was read out. For a small club like ours from the New Forest to win such a prestigious award is truly amazing. I would like to send my thanks to all those that have made this possible over the years. The list of people that help run the club is endless. “
Ex 1st XV Captain & President Tim Gaskell couldn’t hide his delight and whooped “Junior Club of the Year! Wow! There are a lot of people in this magnificent club that deserve a big slap on the back. That includes members and officials, countless volunteers, coaches and managers, players, referees, parents and children, bar, kitchen and ground staff who all enjoy being a part of the club and help out because they love the club and what it stands for. We are also indebted to our growing band of sponsors without whom some things would just not be possible. This is the best reward we as club could give to everyone connected to the club. Well done everybody.”
