Ellingham and Ringwood women 17 – Old Albanians 10
A fantastic result
Our women pulled off another cup upset when they beat the former Premiership side Old Albanians, who are a division above the us, in the third round of the RFU Intermediate Cup and we now progress to the quarter final.
The early stages of the game were very close and the quality of both defences was high, but eventually we were able to break down the Hertfordshire side’s defence when our centre finished a good try under the post’s, which scrum half Rosie Tugwell (pictured) converted. The home side were then able to dominate most of the first half and were rewarded with further tries from Rosie Tugwell and lock forward Amy Shipley to lead 17-0 at the break.
Whatever the Old Albanians coach said at half time was effective and they applied significant pressure to us throughout most of the second half. Their flank forward Kate Shelton crashed over for two tries, but our defence held firm in the last quarter of the game and they were able to complete what was probably the biggest upset of the third round.
After the game the our coach Henry Benson said, “I was really impressed by our first half performance, which ultimately won us the game, but I was equally impressed by the quality of our defence in the second half”. He added, “We were delighted to continue our season’s unbeaten record, but we’ve now got three tough league games in the next three weeks, which will be vital if we’re to achieve our main objective of winning a second successive promotion”.
