North Petherton women 0 – Ellingham & Ringwood 60
A convincing performance
Our newly promoted women's side produced a convincing performance against a tough opposition in Somerset on Sunday to go top of National Challenge Division 1 South West
We were up against a physical and experienced North Petherton side and produced some fantastic fast flowing rugby. But it was the Somerset side that started more brightly and it was only down to some great cover defence that they did not take the lead. We then started to grow into the game and find our rhythm. After some strong carries by the forwards, the backs were released and centre Kiera Paul-Jones showed a clean set of heels to run in a try from the half way line. We then started to control the game and despite some strong North Petherton defence Paul-Jones took another chance and Chloe Barrett added the conversion. We stayed in charge and dictated the tempo of the game well. A break by fly half Charlotte Benson set up a simple 2 on 1 that wing three quarter Nina Hoadley (pictured)finished in the corner. We had one more chance before half time and from a well rehearsed strike move Paul-Jones was again released to secure her hat-trick. The conversion was good from Barrett to make the score 24-0 at half time.
In the second half we stepped up a gear and really started to move the ball around, which made life difficult for the tiring North Petherton side. Paul- Jones scored a further two tries, one an incredible solo effort, to take her tally to five for the afternoon. Barrett converted one and the lead was extended to 36-0. There was a good link-up between Charlotte Benson and Charlotte Smith to execute a 2 on 1 down the blind side and Smith took the chance well to score under the posts. Barrett’s conversion was again good. The North Petherton defence were tiring even more in the final quarter and further tries from Chantelle McClure, Paige Darvill-White and Chloe Barrett with another successful conversion from Barrett gave us a well deserved 60-0 away bonus point win.
After the game coach Henry Benson said, ‘This was the most complete performance from the side since I’ve taken over as coach. To beat a good side like North Petherton by the score we did is a massive achievement. The players have a good understanding of each other and the structure we’ve put in place, which is really giving us the rewards the players deserve’.
