Thirteen local organisations have been selected by staff at the Tesco store in Ellon to receive a share of a £5,000 community fund.

Local residents and shoppers at the store, on Castle Road, were asked to nominate their favourite charities, groups and organisations for the competition to give them a chance of receiving a share of the donation.

Store staff sifted through all the nominations and eventually decided on thirteen organisations to receive donations ranging from £500 to £200. Including Newburgh Playgroup who will be using the money to pay for transport for educational outings for the children and also Ellon and District Men’s Shed, which provides a place where men of all ages can come together to make, restore or repair something and socialise, who will be putting the donation towards refurbishing their premises.

“We ran the competition as we wanted to give our customers and local residents the opportunity to decide how and who we should support in the local community” explained Store Manager, Mark Robison. “The response has been absolutely fantastic, making it very hard to decide who would receive a donation. We are delighted to be able to support these organisations which were nominated by many of our customers.”

The donations will be used for a wide variety of projects and activities including Gordon Park Preschool which is a self-supporting group providing 2’s group and preschool education to children aged between 2-5 years.

Claire Knowles, Manager of the preschool said: “To say we are absolutely over the moon to be receiving the money from Tesco Helping Hands is a huge understatement! We rely heavily on fundraising and grants to be able to support and run the group. Therefore, we are so grateful for the very kind and generous donation given to us by Tesco. The children will be overjoyed with their new sensory equipment.”

Alexander Milne from the Ythanbank Community Club – a club that fundraises and organises activities for the Ythanbank community – said: “We are delighted with the kind donation. The money will go towards play equipment for local children.”

Also benefiting from the competition are the Rotary Club of Ellon, a volunteer organisation with more than 60 members that serves Ellon and the surrounding area. The members use their expertise, time and funds to support local and international projects that help people in need and promote understanding among cultures. Their donation will assist in funding various Rotary organised local events and charitable organisations including the Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party, Primary Schools Quiz, RYLA and its Community Grant Scheme.

Meanwhile the Methlick Community Garden, a peaceful and tranquil area where anyone is welcome to come and sit quietly, enjoying the bird life and grow their own fruit and veg, will be using the donation to purchase garden tools designed for use by children and also tools design with the elderly in mind, particularly those with arthritis.

Frances Watson, Co-ordinator of Ellon Civic Pride, a voluntary group that maintains floral displays and hanging baskets in the town centre during the summer months said: “We are very grateful to Tesco Ellon for the donation which will help us to continue to brighten up Ellon by paying for the continuing maintenance on the water bowser which is essential to our hanging baskets.”

Ellon District Girl Guides will put their donation towards re-plastering and re-painting a piece of wall in their Hut, repairing a leaky and replacing their old wooden front door. Moira Lawrence, District Commissioner for Guirlguiding Ellon said: “We are very appreciative of all donations to the upkeep and maintenance of the hut which will be 40 years old in 2015. Thank you very much to Tesco Ellon for this very generous donation.”

A number of sports teams are also benefiting from the Helping Hand competition.

Ellon Meadows Girls Football Team will be using the money to pay for aluminium goals for the girls team whilst the Ellon Meadows Football Club 2000’s will be using the funds to assist its fundraising efforts towards the costs for a group of fifteen children and four adults to attend and take part in a youth football tournament held near Barcelona in April 2015.

Donna Lyon, coach for the Ellon Academy Netball Team said: “I would like to thank Tesco Ellon so much for choosing us. The donation will go towards a set of netball dresses for the Ellon Academy Junior Team. The team have won all their games this term with six games to play in the New Year and we hope their new dresses will bring them the extra inspiration to win the league!”

Finally, Gareth Kemp, Vice President and Head Coach of Ellon Rugby Club Junior Section said: “Ellon Rugby would like to thank Tesco Ellon for their support. The money will make a massive difference in the ongoing work in the community, here in the North East that the coaches at Ellon Rugby do.”

Over Christmas the store will be open as usual until Christmas Eve when it is open 6am to 7pm, closed on Christmas Day, open from 9am to 6pm on Boxing Day, from 6am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve, 11am to 5pm on New Year’s Day and from 9am to 6pm on Friday 2nd January.
