Firstly a big Thank you to all the players and parents for braving the weather.
Elmbridge U9’s took the field in their opening match to face a very good Sussex side, and although Sussex won the game, Elmbridge put up a great display of try-line defence. After the game the boys only had a few minutes break before taking the field again. And in a close contest that saw Medway the eventual winners the boys raised their game still further. Elmbridge ended the day with a win in another closely fought match that could have gone either way. A huge thank you to Southampton for lending us players and a thank you go to those players for the efforts that put out playing in an Elmbridge shirt.
What hasn’t been said is that we had three players new to rugby league and picked up injuries to a couple of players in the opening match. As a coach I can say that I was very proud of the way the boys acted as a team, the injured players refused to leave the field and played on; their team mates raised their efforts to help them. The new players were made welcome and it was nice to see the experienced boys explaining the complexities of “Play the Ball” to the new players.
We’ve all heard a coach say “It was a team effort and it would be wrong of me to point to one individual ...but if I have to then.” Well I can honestly say that I cannot point to one person, I could find examples for each player to put them in the running as player of the tournament. I will talk to them at training. It really was a team effort, and the boys deserve a huge pat on the back for their efforts. Thanks boys, see you at training.
