History 1 History
The village of Elsecar lies between the neighboring towns of Barnsley and Rotherham. In 1854 it was much smaller and cricket had been played on the Crab Field in Armroyd Lane since early in the century (so called because of the Crab Apple Trees, which lined one side of the field).

William and David Goodinson and a group of the other men of Elsecar decided to form the Elsecar Cricket Club. In 1895 the club joined the Hallamshire League 'A' Division which they played in until 1921 when they joined the Mexborough League. In 1929 they joined the Yorkshire Council (South Yorkshire Section) until the South Riding League was formed in 1948. This league was then re-branded the South Yorkshire League in 2002.
