Ely Hockey Club AGM 2018 took place on Wednesday 6 June. The minutes from the AGM are included in the below document.

Below is the Chairperson's report for 2017/2018

Hello and welcome to Ely City Hockey Clubs AGM. It is so nice to see so many of you here.

Overall, I would say this has been a successful year for the club on and off the pitch.

Ladies 1’s finished 3rd, in division 3NW missing out on promotion by one point and there was only one goal difference between them and second place. So they inevitably will be pushing for promotion this coming season.

Ladies 2’s finished 9th and unfortunately means they will be relegated from division 4NW (s) this however is no reflection on their performance over the season. They started off pretty much a brand new team and over the season have gelled and really started to work together and the results second half of the season reflect this. They too will be pushing for promotion next season to get straight back into this division.

Ladies 3’s finished 10th in division 5NW (s) They have gone from strength to strength. The commitment from the ladies going out week after week despite not winning is admiral and they never cease to put up a good fight. The encouragement and support shown from the older players to the younger ones coming through is really positive and gives the youngsters a great starting platform into league hockey.

Men’s 1’s finished 5th in division 3NW they continue to build on the solid foundation established in previous seasons with another good consistent season remained in contention for promotion to the last couple of games. Arguably the team were only denied promotion by the weather prolonged season and some unlucky and untimely injuries.

Men’s 2’s finished 5th in division 6NW (s)

Men’s 3’s finished 10th in division 6NW (s) they had a much more positive season. Didn’t win much but pretty much all competitive games and equally good to see several youngsters playing every week and really enjoying stepping up to playing adult hockey. A few new adults too and pretty solid numbers each week with some kind assistance from players doubling at times!

Lots of people helped out due to shortage of keepers which was great too so Tim and Dave in particular deserve thanks there.

Overall I feel we are in a really good position to build on for next season.

We have a thriving junior section which I will leave Dave to talk about a little bit later, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave and everyone involved in the junior section for all their time and effort in helping make it so successful.

As always there are a lot of people to thank. I would like to start with the team captains who have done an exceptional job. Everyone of them have been dedicated to the challenging task of getting a team together, running their teams, administrative tasks and contributing to committee meetings. I am very proud of you all.

I thank all of the clubs non playing volunteers and committee members who contribute so much and without whom the club would not function.

I would like to say a special thank you to our Umpires. Hannah our current umpire liaison officer has kindly written a few words...

‘Umpiring is always a tricky situation however we wouldn’t be playing without them. There has been a mixed bag of availability widening the thank you’s to the following: Fez Abbas, Rachel Carpenter, Thomas Grimshaw, Fran Flack, Chris Purllant, Andy McCall, Emily Radcliffe, Tim Reynolds, Keith Squires, David Webb and for our newly started/ Qualified umpires Evie Flack, Mo Hodson, Kerry Newson, Rich Scargill and Keely Taylor. A special thanks goes to Tim Cooper, Richy Gogin and Ian Grange for their hard work and commitment throughout the season- we would have been stuck without these 3 being the only few who will umpire mens 1!! Whilst this seems a lot, with most umpires also being players we need many more! There is a course running on September 30th held at EOSA- Please sign up!’

We have had some successful socials this year ones to mention, the quiz night which even though there was a fear of being snowed in, there was a fantastic turn out, and the tournament which yet again was very successful and enjoyed by many. A special thank you to Gemma Neal our social secretary for taking the lead and everyone that has supported her in the success of these events.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jon from EOSA for his help and support during these as well.

So this year after 25 years our pitch is finally no longer suitable for league hockey. We have moved forward in raising funds to replace it with Julia Gilbert taking the lead on this. She will be talking about this a little bit later. Again I would like to thank Julia and those supporting her for all of their time and effort in moving this forward and making it possible.

I would also like to say a special thanks to Fran our club secretary as she has been integral to the club from the administrative side of things and keeping myself and the committee in order.

I address this to everybody. The club relies on your all time, effort and passion without it, it would not exist and for this I thank you all.
