Tigers bounce back in style.
Ely Development were keen to put in a good performance after a mauling the previous week at the hands of a very fit Spanish side, Poblenou. In windy wet conditions the team settled quickly and defended a zealous start by the heavier St Neots pack eventually turning over the ball for Sam Benzie to kick long for winger Charlie Coupland to chase, which he did with precision to steal the ball from the opposition full back and sprint in for the first try of the match. Sam Benzie converted. A srum awarded to Ely on ten minutes resulted in scrum half Jack Brownlie breaking and feeding Sam Benzie who scored and converted his own try. The home team were then awarded three successive penalties for infringements at the break down and their pack forced the ball over for a try. Not phased by this the visitors created their own overlap from fine forward play and slick passing allowed Charlie Coupland to score his second try of the match. So at half time Ely went in leading by 19 -7. After the break scrum half Jack Brownlie broke from his own half for a fine individual try. Ely then brought on replacements Lloyd Palmer and Peter Forteath before the home team forwards once again ground out a rolling maul and try. While they were still celebrating Peter Forteath took a quick restart which Nev MacNish chased and won then feeding the centres before winning a try in the opposition 22. From the try Robin Guy broke free before passing inside for Lloyd Palmer to score. Ely were now dominating the match and two quick successive trys by captain Nev Macnish were converted by replacement fly half Peter Forteath. A late try by centre John Dibb rounded off a fine team performance with a 48 -12 win.
