Newmarket Development v Ely Development
A closely fought contest resulting in a disappointing loss for Ely.
Ely Development travelled to Newmarket for their first match of the new year. Both teams had several changes to the teams that took to field earlier in the season when Ely won. The matches started with a series of scrubs and rucks that led to the first try of the match to the hosts after an individual run by Newmarkets scrum half was halted five metres short only for the referee to award a penalty. a tap kick was passed to the blindside and scored with a conversion to follow. Ely fought back and a lineout on the hosts twenty two resulted in a ruck and quick ball between fly Peter Forteath and centre Ed Fahy who forced his way over to score. Forteath converted to even the score. Newmarket then turned over an Ely attack to run from their own half to score. Ely found themselves further behind when once again the Newmarket scrumhalf scythed through the defence to score, 17-7 to the hosts. Ely then lost scrum half Jack Brownlie with a shoulder injury forcing captain Nev MacNish to move to 9 and bringing on Dave Kempers into the centres. Undeterred Ely fought back and were awarded a penalty try when full back Paul Dewey was deliberately pushed away from the ball in the try area. Peter Forteath converted, 17-14. Peter Forteath then took a quick penalty and the home side were caught napping, quick handling resulted in a try for Lewis Harvey and half time. in the second half Ely were into the wind and up hill resulting in a much more defensive game. The home side were awarded a penalty and went ahead 20-19. Ely were then awarded a penalty on the oppositions 10 metre line. Peter Forteath gave the ball an almighty thump which drifted inches wide of the upright. Newmarket then scored a penalty and put the game to bed with a converte try in the last minute. Ely man of the match was Nev MacNish who stood in at scrum half for most of the game.
