Ely travelled to Saffron Walden with a much changed side due to injury and enforced absences on a wet and windy Saturday. The home side won the toss and elected to play with the wind (and rain) immediately pushing the visitors onto the back foot with probing kicks. Even so the match stayed even for them minutes before the home side broke through from a scrum to score the first try. They soon added a further three points from a penalty kick. The half continued with Ely pinned back for long periods before the host eventually broke through to score and convert. At half time Development trailed 15-0. In the second half the rain came horizontally on a northern wind and although a lot of the game was now in the home teams half Ely failed to capitalise and allowed the host to break through and score. Harry Atkinson playing his first senior game at scrum half performed well as did Robin Guy who came on as a second half replacement.
