Sawston v Ely Development
An astonishing turn around in a tight fixture.
The first half had the visitors playing into a strong headwind on a slight incline and the home team immediately decided to play a long kicking game resulting in Ely having to defend deep and try to work the ball through hands to the opponents half. Sawston used this advantage to good effect scoring five try's to Ely's solitary penalty, so at half time Ely trailed by 25 -13.
Captain for the day Tim Mills made an inspiring half time speech and Ely came out a different side securing four trys of their own. As the match wore on Ely took control so at the end Sawston congratulated themselves for hanging on to a 25-25 draw.
A discussion between the referee and two team captains resulted in both teams agreeing to play a further 10 minutes each way, a decision Ely relished. Once more up hill and against the wind the visitors resolved to hold back the home side, however the team from two divisions higher were struggling with Ely's running backs and the visitors went ahead through a fine team try finished by Harry Rogerson. In the second period of added time Peter Forteath converted a penalty from close to the touch pushing the hosts to eight points behind. This settled Ely who then went on to score a try started by man of the match Harry Rogerson in his own 22 and after a deft kick by captain Tim Mills, finished by the same player. Peter Forteath converted. Final score Sawston 25 Ely Development 40.
